Who says.  Think there are plenty. Just seems like most folks went for the 890 early on. Myself included, had a 70 500, too much rust for me. Which leads me to believe that a lot of the 3rd generation, bad metal and all ended up for scrap. Given the prices of 890 models the 3rd gens are a bargain and have their own following as well. Getting back to King Richard's car. That indeed is one bad a _ _ ride.

In 1975 I was at the Firecracker 400 in July at Daytona. Petty qualified at 180 mph, in 13th spot.
He ran 180 all day....   Other blew up, had issues and generally slowed down from their better starting positions.
Near the end of the race he motored by Buddy Baker's Ford going into turn 3. Buddy had slowed down and was lapping it the 178 range.
That was Petty's first Firecracker 400 win!!

  awesome racing machine  , the third generation charger , think the aero was as good , if not slightly better than the wing cars , i believe , don't quote me though , just something i remember reading sometime ago

It must be out there.  I have this vague notion I've seen photos of all of those cars being tested but as a possibly less scientific method Car Life or one of the car mags used to publish some of that kind of data in their road tests.

I don't know how much reskinning Petty was forced to do.  One of the aero guys will know for sure but I doubt much it was the 67 car if it was a reskin.  More likely one of the 71 or 72 cars, no?

SSSHHH*TTT, ALL those cars WERE, was "Skins"...And engine, tube chassis, and 4-speed/rearend. Body was just there to sell cars for the dealers.

Yes, but 67 they were still sending body in white out to the factory teams and with Petty being THE factory team by 73 and supplying all the other Mopar NASCAR racers he enjoyed a somewhat different status.  I'm not naive enough to suggest that he took a 73 Charger added a roll cage and away he went but I think his parts procurement situation was a little more "deluxe" than some of the others.

Maybe it be worth a little time for you to Investigate and find out if it was actually a re-body of an earlier car. I usually don't do roundy-round sh*t as they drive around in circles looking for the finish line. I drive straight towards it. I do like Petty though. the REAL "King".

I would think it is just a more recent one than the 67 is my guess.  But a guess is all it is, I know as much about that stuff as you do.

I do think the "days of old" NASCAR cars actually resemble "stock cars" of the day, more so than today. I'm still looking for the 750 HP, RWD Toyota I saw at one dem races. Toyota dealer tells me I'm crazy though.

No idea.

But I can say 100% that up to 1971 the cars are not just skins on a tube frame. There was an evolution starting in the 70's using total jigs to put the car together, rather than a BIW, adding the cage and modifying the frame rails and spring locations.

Petty didn't have to re-skin cars, he'd build new ones.   Sponsor $$$$$, whether it was from Chrysler or later, STP allowed that.
Typically, in the 60s, last years speedway car became the new short track car.  When cars started to be purpose built, that didn't work so good!

Case in point - the 70 Charger low rider short track car of Bobby Isaac.  Nascar rules said - measure the car to ground behind the driver side wheel.  Normally on a speedway, that is the lowest part.  Well, on the low rider, it was the highest... Hence 11 wins in that car in 1970.
