Fuel Tank Capacity

So I'm still working away on the project car that will never be done and I'm going to start cutting up the fuel tank for the quick change clearance and the fuel injection sump. I need to know how much gas the tank holds before I start chopping. Does anyone know the actual number and how much can be pumped in it? I'm coming up with nearly 25 gallons, but that can't be right?????

Also, what is everyone's opinion on loosing approximately three to five gallons capacity?

Thanks guys....

I thought the stock tank size was 21 gas for a 68-70 b body.   :scratchchin:

I wouldn't think they'd be 4 gallons smaller if anything. Stands to reason, one could spot that much difference.

Does anyone think it would be a horrible thing to only have 15 gallons...

Not when you have a slant 6 under the hood. :icon_smile_big:

The tank is at least 19 gal as I have put in 18.5 a couple of times.

my 66's also have a 19 gallon tank..but I did put just over 20 in it when it ran outta gas at the station I was working at back in '74

There's nothing wrong with a 1-gallon gas tank, if you are willing to stop and refill it often enough.

I see nothing horribly wrong with reducing the 19-gallon stock tank down to 15 gallons.  Big deal, you will have to stop a little more often.  How much that bothers you depends on your car's gas mileage and your cruising distance demands.

Ghoste

I think the 15 gallon figure may have popped up from the stupid Canadians.  The Canadian (Imperial- from Britain actually) gallon was larger than the US gallon which makes the tank capacity appear smaller.  I could be wrong but I think 19 gallons US and 15 gallons Canadian may be the same amount.

The E-body (Cuda and Challenger)tanks are only 16 gallons and they come with the same engines so, no, I don't think it's a big deal. Of course, my cars all get reasonable mileage. If you swap in a 700 hp race motor that gets 6 mpg you'll regret it.

Can I have your spare 4 gallons?  I get tired of filling it up every week.
