The kids bail :rotz: and leave gramps (who remains cool as a cucumber :2thumbs:) to deal with it.  :flame:
The thing sounded pretty good all spooled up!

You should try it live sometime.  :yesnod:  It's a sure way to get the adrenaline flowing. I had the same thing happen with a 6-71 Detroit many years ago, but I couldn't get to the intake to shut it down. I had to take a pair of vise-grips and squeeze the fuel supply line going to the pump. It doesn't shut down nearly as fast but it didn't send any parts through the block.  :o

Back in 92-3, I worked for a construction company on their trucks. The shop next door, (connected building), had one get loose and it did send parts all over the shop.. If I remember right, they were just changing the oil and filters.. Oil and fuel.. An old freight liner I think. It scared the shit out of us next door. I an really glad I wasn't right there!!   :o

it was fun  when an diesel would run away  had a rack lock wide open on an old mack going down the freeway  baled off a ramp into city traffic was going to take it out of gear and let her blow but pulled the fuel pin and it shut down  they usally dont let you shut them off

I didn't see it happen, but I did get the piece of equipment in to repair it... A customer had one roll over and it started running away. The guy shut the fuel off and it continued running hard and finally grenaded. When it rolled over it started sucking engine oil out of the crankcase which is why shutting the fuel off didn't help. Only 100% sure way I'm aware of to shut them down is what the old man in the video did, shut the air supply off to it.

The detroits should have a air shut off valve someplace............. If something is wrong though and they can get oil from the crankcase its hard to get them to shut down. I think bad seals in the blower will also allow it to suck oil in and continue to run!  Any diesel can do this but the detroits are real bad about it. Any diesels that work around stuff that could produce gas in the air need to have some kind of air shut off..........run a backhoe and cut a gas line digging and you got problems if you dont get it shut down fast!

Pictures of my friends GMC oil field truck.......the small T handle to the right on the dash is the air shut off...........

In the end its just an old noisy oil dripping detroit diesel!  I say get back and let it go! Enjoy!HAHA!
