How many of the Charger "Wanted" ads do you suppose are "unrealistic"?

Looking at ads, it seems most are for 2nd gen Charger, specifically 1969 cars. Got me thinking... :scratchchin:

How many of these ads are posted by dreamers who:

  • 1. have no money
  • 2. unrealistic of what's involved in owning/maintaining a 43 year-old car
    • 3. have no idea of these cars and their real value
    • 4. want to paint it orange w/ the Stars and Bars on the roof
      • 5. ALL the above

FWIW, I posted an"wanted ad" on this site and bought a 1969 Charger within 6 mos. of the ad. Just wondering what others have found or experienced with the wanted ads here, or on other Charger/MOPAR sites.  :popcrn:

With heavy emphasis on #1 and  #2.

I would also add that a good number of them are flippers out fishing...

I removed mine from for sale ads, and I STILL get PM's asking me do I still have it.

I simply reply: "Yes, but I'm in the process of tearing it apart. You still interested?"
That usually let's them know how I feel about sending out fifty-nine thousand pics for their website...

I posted a wanted ad two months ago & am still looking. I had a couple replies with links to Chargers for sale, but those cars were sold when I contacted the owners. I have only received 2 pm's regarding Chargers meeting my criteria & in both cases, they were cars that the person pm'ing me thought were for sell (1 was already sold & the other wasn't for sale at this time). I haven't received any messages from actual sellers.

I don't know about the other guys posting wanted ads, but in my case:

1) I posted what my budget is. $15k. I thought that would get me a decent car needing work. I am not anticipating something that I can just hop in & take a 1000 mile road trip, but I shouldn't have to order the whole AMD parts list for it either.

2) I have a few 40+ year old cars, so I realize the maintainence (sp?) involved in these old rides.

3) This is maybe where I am dreaming. As stated earlier, I would think my budget would get a decent vehicle. When I say decent, I don't mean 100% rust free & show room condition. I am thinking something that needs trunk floor repair & quarter panel work (body wise). Also, I feel the interior would be mostly complete but needing some repairs (seat covers, carpet, headliner, & gauge repair). As far as drivetrain, at my budget, I am probably looking at a small block equipped car if the body is decent. I don't anticipate finding any numbers matching R/T's & to be honest, that's not what I want. FWIW: The ebay Charger that Wayne & Chuck had for sale earlier this year was the perfect car for me. Some folks on this site thought they were asking a little much for it, but to me, it was worth every penny. I actually had a deal cut with them on the car but had to bail out at the very last minute after getting an unexpected indefinate layoff from my employer at that time. As much as I hated to do it, I couldn't justify spending my cash stash on a toy & run the risk of having my family not having groceries.

4) My ad states clearly what I am wanting to do with the car & make a GL clone out of it (maybe that is why I haven't got hardly any responses on it).

As I said earlier, I don't know what the other guy's with want ads intentions are, but I am seriously looking for a keeper. Maybe my hopes are too high at my budget (let me know if you guys think they are, everyone has an opinion). I am in no rush to find my ideal ride & I know its gonna take some time.

flyguy350

I'm one of those that posted an ad also, I've wanted and have been looking for a Charger for as long as I can remember. I finally am in a place in my life where I think it's viable to get one, ie career wise, kids wise, have a house with a garage, and have some money set aside for it.

1. I have the money.
2. I have never owned a car that old and really don't know what to expect but I suppose some parts will be good and others not so much. It will be a learning experience.
3. I have been watching the market on Chargers for many many years and have an idea what they are worth, but you have to remember we all have different opinions on what these cars are worth, but I feel I'm fairly realistic on 20k for a decent driver condition car, not asking to find a matching numbers RT/SE 4 speed 440 for that. I live in Toronto so it's a car I wouldn't be able to drive from lets say November to May, I won't drive to work, won't drive in bad weather so basically its going to be a 20k piece of art sitting in my garage 95% of the time.
4. I'm not looking to make a G/L, nothing wrong with it just not my thing.
5. I've been waiting for so long that I won't just buy one for the sake of getting it, just want to wait to get the one that's right for me.

Cheers

P.S. I figured this would be the place to continue my search for one, cause people that are involved in the Charger world would have the the most insight into where I could find one, plus reading the boards has been a wealth of knowledge.

Your post is a breath of fresh air. Thanks!

I think you are on the right track... I wanted a GL clone for my daughter and bought one. We set our budget at $17,000, figuring anything listed for $20k would be negotiable. We looked on all the sites at what seemed like mostly overpriced junk. We tried Craigslist, etc. and finally found a car, only to have it "sold" by the time we contacted the guy.

As we continued to look, the guy contacted us, as his buyer fell through. We ended up buying the car after seeing it this past spring. Even with enclosed transportation home, I was several thousand dollars UNDER budget! Patience, paid off :Twocents:

The car is a 1969 Dodge Charger, painted just like the General Lee. It was a recently completed project. Their loss, our gain. We really haven't had to do much to the car, other than add gasoline  :2thumbs:

Again, your post is great and I wish you luck in your search

1974dodgecharger

im pretty UN-realistic as a buyer...yeah im a horrible human being I hate sitting on a bundle of cash being picky for a car just hate cash.....

No, really just as a seller is picky about his price on his charger im just as picky on my price I expect on a charger and proud of it.  I know I have offered plenty of chargers a 'fair' asking price only for the seller to come back and tell me 'NO", but then 4 months later they come back to me with their tail between their legs asking for the price I offered them after they found out how un realstic they were, of course knowing me and knowing there is always a charger for sale I say 'no' just to say no just because its not what im looking for specifically, but im willing to forgo some substitues such as a 4 speed vs black color etc.

From reading some of the wanted ads on the site, I hear what your saying XS29L9BXXXXXX, but I'm in the same boat as flyguy350.

1, Have the money (Hell, I even have my wife's permission!)
2, Well aware of the problems of owning a 40yo car
3, Been following Charger prices for over a decade and have observed the peaks and lows
4, Don't want to buy nor create a General

I have had no replies and only one PM since my wanted ad went up over two months ago.
I guess the curve ball for me is that I am an overseas buyer, which may turn a few sellers off.
Everywhere I seem to look, it's either an junker or a Hemi car and nothing in between.
I accept that it could take years for me to find a car, but I guess I expected a few more bites after placing the ad.

So hey sellers, check out my wanted ad: No junk, 69 RT, 40K+ to spend!!!  ;)
Sorry in advance for using this thread to further advertise, it's a bit cheeky I know.

That is funny. I posted wanted 69 Charger and bought a GENERAL LEE from here on 07 or 08. It had "issues" after I got it so I sold it for what I had in it. The next guy flipped it and got 20 grand for it... I posted again not long ago and bought my green Charger. Not from here, but had 20 g`s and was serious. Not everyone are "dreamers." I hate wasting time as much as I hate my time being wasted.... As per "flippers" if someone gets what they want for their ride then everyone needs to stfu on what the purchaser does with it. I know some that did it and it was all ok and grand but some who did it and got bashed. That is BS too!!!!!!

I always seem to get the clowns that want to trade me their mom's pontiac or make payments... I'd love to sell some of my projects to somebody that was serious...

I posted a want ad and eventually just let it expire as I got tired of the emails from sellers that were TELLING me how much the car was worth and started being belligerent when I started to ask specific questions.  I had plenty of cash and a line of credit, the wife was on board and it still took me 2 yrs. Everything I own requires time to maintain, I prefer to do most of it on my own rather than paying someone else. Most folks these days pay someone to mow their lawn let alone perform maintenance on anything.  :shruggy:

Bottom line - there are problems on both ends of the buying/selling gig.

Providing pics is not a difficult or complicated problem but lots of sellers seem to complain heartily about it though.  :pity:  There are tons of free picture hosting services out there - Picasa is the simplest example. Sellers should take lots of pics and more if they ask for them and simply post them to a public album. List IN THE AD the link to the album. It filters initial requests, removes the need for lots of emailing and most important it reduces overall effort. Pics are an undeniable part of internet sales. Sellers need to have Pics available and lots of them. If that's not something they can deal with than I suggest using an alternate medium for selling their wares.   :Twocents:  I sure has heck wasn't going to shell out lots of time or money on a car sold over the net unless I got a good set of initial pics to do an initial inspection. It told me how serious the seller was and what kind of reaction I was going to get during the remaining buying process. I got tons of emailed pics and used Picasa to push them out to friends to provide a second point of view. Crappy pics were usually a good sign of a junk car or a seller who was trying to hide something.  :Twocents:

No, not everyone has access to a lift. But its not hard to buy 5 or 10 minutes at a local independent mechanic. At least I could get that time at mine.

I had several situations where they crawled under the car with a shop light and took pics or drove one side up on a curb to get clearance under that side. They were not the best but it was something that showed they were willing and usually gave me enough to determine if I wanted to get boots on the ground there to check it out.

I had one guy get all bent out of shape because the pics he sent turned me off of the car. I wish that car worked out.  :icon_smile_dissapprove:

I took ones like this laying on the ground and can kind of see what you are saying. I bet my trunk floor has a tiny hole in it maybe someplace
but to pull the jack, spare and so on is a bitch. Putting it all back is worse!

= a pain in the ass.

Hey now, you got a great Charger.  Who knows how the other would've turned out.  You're commited to make this one your own.  When you get it out of storage, fix the overheating and drive the rubber off of it.

Reminds me of a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T I inquired about from a place called "******** B******s" in Northern CA. ***** ******* was the fellas name, and he claimed the Charger was numbers matching and no rust larger than an eraser head.

When I flew to CA, rented a car, stayed the night and looked at the car the next day, I was met by an arrogant fool, or so he acted... ***** claimed there were no lifts in the town (Auburn) and when I got back to the "retirement home" he met me at (shoulda been a sign right there, when he wouldn't meet at his own location), I pulled the car on the curb, crawled under, and found no numbers on the engine block.

******* lied about the car and the rust, too. I opened the truck, moved the spare transmission, then found the trunk rusted out. There was a piece of sheetmetal over the holes one could stick many fingers through...

Anyways, I'm off subject now... But anyone with a shop in town can get pics.  :Twocents:

That problem is being addressed.
