I have a 1968 Charger and need new mufflers.  I want to know what is the best muffler that will be as loud as possible but still be able to hold a conversation inside the car while driving.  I have been looking at Flowmasters and seem to like them.

This is a loaded question and you will get fifty replies and all are different. Kinda like asking my mother about who she liked better, me or my brother.

Flowmasters are great mufflers. I used to think they were the only muffler. Now, however, they are common to me and i wanted something different.
Magnaflow is on my Chally and I like 'em so far.

Not too loud like Flowmasters, but loud enough when you get on them. Depending on the Flowmaster you choose, "Droan" may become a concern.
The Magnaflow mufflers droan a little, but not as bad as Flowmasters.

Then, there's the mix and match of running a set of glasspacks as "resonators", along with Flowmasters to create a totally unique sounding car.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find a muffler as loud as flowmasters that perform better than a flowmaster. I think a race bullet muffler with an x-pipe is the way to go for performance and still be loud. Free flowing exhaust also sometimes kills a bit of torque so it is a bit of playing around till you get it right.

I bought flowmaster super 44's to tone it down a bit and I hate them, thinking of giving race bullets another try. I had the bullets on an H-pipe which didn't sound the best in my opinion but now that I have an x-pipe I want to give them another try since the x-pipe mellows it out a bit. The super 44's would probably sound better on the H.

I also had moroso race bullets on my Chev with 90* x-pipe and it sounded like a sprint car.

I'm running Warlock mufflers through three inch exhaust which drops off before the rear axle.I think they sound better than the flowmaster. With my 383 they do shake the ground around the car which you said you wanted something quiet.

Dumps will shake the ground and sound good but carbon monoxide in the cabin is bad.

If you're gonna go, what better way than in your charger!

IMHO the factory Hemi muffler is the best compromise of flow and sound.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I love my Hemi hi flow mufflers from accurate. A bit louder then a factory Hemi but droaning not to bad.

So, you think that this would be a difficult question for her?  :icon_smile_big:

"...best muffler that will be as loud as possible but still be able to hold a conversation inside the car while driving...."

Only you can answer this, as it is a personal preference thing.

A factory type muffler will rumble a little, the DynoMax long case super turbo (17747 or 8) will be a little louder, and the Ultra Flows (17512 or 3) louder yet, but still reasonable.  The drone for these gets worse as the muffler gets louder.

Dynomax are too quiet in my opinion, flowmasters  are a bit more aggressive but still able to easily have a conversation. Bullets are ok with the windows up but at freeway speeds with the windows down or next to median walls forget it.

The best muffler I have heard so far is the FlowMaster Super 40 Series.  My friend has them on his Hemi Dart, you can hear him at least a block away, really awesome, if that is what you are looking for. Interior resonance is not bad either.

You are going to get all sorts of opinions.  Do a search.  Personally, I am happy with with the Ultra Flo 17230:  http://www.summitracing.com/parts/wlk-17230/overview/

I love my flowmaster 50 series suv mufflers. Easily hold a conversation in the car but gets really loud when you stand on it.

Your best bet is go to some car cruises and listen to other people's cars.
