In this day and age of online everything and mail order giants Summit and Jegs with their big box pricing there are very few speed shops anymore.  Even in a place like Detroit they just aren't as numerous as they once were.  Even in my little pissant town of 50,000 we used to have two.  They've both been gone for years.  If you have one in town, be sure to stop in there on Saturday mornings even if youdon't need anything just to bench race and buy a soda from the vending machine.
Are you one of the lucky ones that still has one in town?

JB400

Yep, have one in my town.  Been there for decades.  Only place in town where you can buy parts for a dirt late model and and a late model car. :2thumbs:

twodko

Yep, Gotelli's speed shop on the SF peninsula.
FLY NAVY/Marine Corps or take the bus!

we have one here in vegas but 90% of what they have on the shelf is chevy of course, used to go in there 1-2 month just to shoot the breeze but haven't been in 5-6 years now, its still going strong, doesn't need my input

Ive got a local joint I used to go to when i was 15 and had to ride my bike there to get stupid stuff for my VW Beetle so I could drive it up and down the driveway.

Theyre more of just a parts store now than a speed shop and they even do parts installation now.

Thanks Dan and Alex @ Liberty Automotive and Speed!
wingless now, but still around.

We have "Machine shops" that don't really carter to being "Speed shops". Most are pricing so heavily that if you don't have a sponsor, you can't afford to build anything with them. One being Sonny Leonard Racing.

Don;t get me wrong, Sonny's Racing hasn't really done a "Street" Engine in over 15 years I Imagine. Most are over $100K, and going overseas.

I have a local guy that does an amazing job out of his backyard. Wallar Browning Machine. Well known round here, but not into the internet or anything so no .Com addy yet. Does ALOT of top notch sh*t. I have been bringing him engines since I wasin HS. Bought him my first engine.
Last one he did for me was the 440 in the Chally. Another here like to take in your Steel crank, Six Pack, 440 and give you in return a Cast crank turd, claiming it's "Your engine you dropped off three months earlier". I have since refused to use him ever again. Screwed up one of my customers 440's I was building, then told me when I called him on the "Big valves" he charged my cust. $20.00/piece for, "We never talked about 2.14/1.81 valves"...
Yep, charged him $20.00/piece for STOCK 1.740 Valves. (516 heads had 1.60 stock)..Bastid.
I can get that sh*t two in a pack from NAPA for like $19.00.

No real "Speed shops" here that have one stop shopping. We have to order most everything.
" I have spent thousands of dollars and countless hours researching what works and what doesn't and I'm willing to share"

440

Nelson racing engines builds 1500+ hp street versions of their engines for like 45k.

I should add that's for the Chev engines so the mopars are probably more.

TheGhost

Closest we got here is Reed Koeppe's shop.  Might have to stop by.  Reed is a big Mopar guy.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.  Especially if they have access to the internet.

Dino

There's a speed shop in Detroit?  I though most people had left by now...

Ghoste

Yeah, it sure isn't what it once was is it?

Dino

Alas it is not.  I don't have high hopes for the city anymore and I feel horrible for the people who've been living there all their lives and now have to deal with the decay and the lack of public service.

here in vegas I go to figgs speed shop. The guys there are great to talk to and very knowledgable. They don't carry much mopar but when I need something I usually get it the next day and prices are very comparable to jegs.

We have two here. One is more of a performance warehouse that does mostly mail order and caters to the local dirt car racers. They do have a large selection of Earls, Holley, Moroso etc. But they don't really carry much street car stuff and no Mopar at all.

The other is a small shop that's been there since 1967 and caters more toward the street/drag crowd. Its a great place. In fact I was just there yesterday to pick up a valley pan gasket and oil filter.  ;D :2thumbs:

Brads70

We have 2 in out little northern town. ( Barrie, Ontario, Canada) Bayside automotive is heavy into circle track parts and anything else. I hang out there often (2-3 times a week) and a chain store called Performance Improvements  lots of tuner parts as well as traditional hotrod/muscle car parts. Around here most of the engine builders are at least 60. Seems to be a dying trade?  :'(

Last time I checked must've been 4 years ago, not sure if he's still around.  I'll have to look it up.

The 2 closest to me closed down almost 10 years ago.    They couldn't compete with jegmmit.    One of the owners opened a powdercoating shop that I use when I can.    The other runs a vending machine business.

I can't even buy holley jets at autozone anymore.  :'(
