:shruggy: According to Collectors Automobile Magazine, this was a clay for a Possible 'Second Gen.
the only thing i see to tie it visually to the '68/'70 are the parking lamps. Other then that it looks very near to the '70 Mercury Montego especially the lower body sculpting. weird..  :-\

That would have made for a very different General Lee.  The Duke boys couldn't have really done a hood slide without racking their jewels and/or ripping their jeans!

Man, all I have to say is thank goodness.  I don't like a LOT about that car design.  :eek2:

and then there's this..

Ghoste

Definitely see some elements that turned up in the 3rd gens on that one.

areibel

Yeah, the roof looks third gen, but the rest looks like a Torino!

Kern Dog

Oh my lord, what a hideous pile!
That car reminds me of those entertainment stories where they tell of other actors that auditioned for a movie part. Ryan o Neal actually was considered to play the role of Rocky Balboa.... :hah:

bull

Glad we Dodged that bullet. :D

JB400

I see a third gen roof, with a riviera front end, and a 68 corvette rear end.  And a Javelin on the drawing board.

Ghoste

And Rallye wheels.  Is that second photo a proposal for the 2nd gen or 3rd gen?

bakerhillpins

Looks like its for a 3rd gen to me.

I'm kind of even questioning the first photo now.  Do you have more information on them Brock?

bakerhillpins

In the first photo it looks like they only made half a car and it's leaning up against mirrors to make it look complete and symmetric.  :scope:

Not sure the 1st looks like any year in particular.  :scratchchin:

A very early collection of several ideas then?

bakerhillpins

Sure.  :shruggy:  All speculation on my part, obviously. Makes it kind fun though.  :yesnod:

No, the first has no info attached though as i have mentioned earlier (yrs ago now) Collectors Automobile did a extensive piece on the designing of the second gen many yrs. ago. i forget the date now I have contacted them, (and magazine collectors and sellers) on more then one occasion unsuccessfully trying to get a copy of that sold out issue. near as I can tell that first photo is from that issue,..
I'll look around and try to find it's issue date again. There was a quote in that article posted several times about how, there was a clay built for a Charger based on the '68 Coronet. which was not well received, but that when the pet double diamond project that was supposed to be destroyed was revealed to the Execs. who had never seen it, it was instantly green lighted.  As regards these clays looking like Ford and even AMC products (that came out later) there was more than a little industrial espionage, going on.

Brock Samson

In addition: if you look at the first clay, you can see the Wheelbase is too long.. especially in the back, and the A-Pillar windshield posts are all wrong. however the tumblehome (the depth in plain view) at the rear wheel arch is very nearly what appeared in production,..  i think in retrospect they were chasing the Personal Luxury field at this time Thunderbird, Rivi, Grand Prix and the upcoming Toronado, (check the rear bumper) which were really the only products in a soon to be crowded field, but I totally agree, it looks like Ass.  :eek2:

...

Ghoste

That photo I've seen before,  Starting to come together a little more by that point.
