http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=170937304423&index=1&nav=SEARCH&nid=11544211917.  I know this is an eBay charger, but I was really curious to see what all the pros on here think its worth. I'm gonna say $8,000-maybe $9,000.  I just thought it was weird how the rust is on the trunk lid and tail pannel...What would cause that?  When I get out of college I hope to find a car in this condition. Original, complete, and decent options. Thanks for taking a look!

1968 Charger (glorified parts car)
Yes, I know I have too many cars. My wife reminds me daily.

It's worth exactly what it's bringing.  As far as the rust issue, that seems to be normal.  Mine is the same way.  Snow and ice build up on the bumper and sits there.  On the decklid, water curls under the decklid and gets caught in the pinch weld and sits there.  Get enough moisture in one spot for very long, and it'll start to rust.

Brock Lee

That trunk rot usually occurs when the drainage channels around the trunk seal get clogged with pine needles and leaves. After a while that whole area by the tailpanel is clogged with decayed matter that looks like compost. It holds in moisture and proceeds to rot the area out.

Personally, Ii think it's about $5,000.00 over-bid as it is.

Nice trunk mat, what does the floor look like underneath?

hawkeye

even if the guy gave the car to you, it doesn't make economic sense to restore it.  unless you do all the body work/paint yourself,  you are looking at 10 grand.  then you start on the motor and interior.  by the time you are done, you are looking at 25 to 30.  when you are done, you have car a car worth 15 to 20, maybe.   do yourself a favor and find a rust free car.     :Twocents:

Ghoste

The smallblock hurts it but it is an SE so I would restored it would hit the high side of your estimate.  You would still be uspide down in the deal so it will have to be restored as a labor of love. (which they all should be anyway)

yeah both true, perhaps i'm living in the wrong decade,

getting a bit side tracked now , not talking about this car as such , but !
nothing wrong in buying a rotted out rusty car , especially if you have the skills to do all the work your self ,   & now especially with all the new AMD sheet metal ,  years ago , you would buy a rotted out car , or one that needs total restoration for next to nothing ,  strip it all down & cut  all the rusty metal out & or sweep it up off the floor , when you stand back & look at your handy work , there is only ,30 percent of the body left  ::)  no biggie cause you prolly only spent $1500 or less , labour time was your own & only paying for parts etc
but some of the price of these cars today / recently , your  having to spend  5 to 12 thousand, plus in somecases , for a fairly decent car , still needing a complete resto , so you buy it  start
stripping it down to restore,  &  are still throwing 70 percent of the car away as rotted metal / beat up/used up parts shrapnel ,
crazy times  :yesnod: think with all the repoped sheet metal now, avalible , thats why the price of rotted out cars has gone up ,
don't know where i'm going with this ,  but i know what im trying to say i think ,  :slap:

bottom line , prices have gone crazy , whats being asked for rotted out chargers / mopars  :Twocents:

This car looks like a great project, nothing says you HAVE to restore it. I feel this car would be great just to get going, get it safe for the road and then never give it a 2nd thought..  The car on ebay is worth maybe 7 grand? give or take. Most everywere else in reality, its maybe a 3.5-5k charger.

Damn right.   :iagree:  Once you tear into this car it will be a never ending restoration.  Buy it, make it roadworthy, and enjoy endless miles of cruising.  All you need to make this car look nice are a sweet set of wheels.  So save your money and buy some nice wheels, and spend the rest on gas and oil changes.  :Twocents:

Its never  been economical to restore any car because you never know what the market will bring when time to sell. This is a hobby. Its worth about 8-9k, great car to start with.

JB400

There was someone that bought a 70 hemicuda convertible for $700,000+ that was chained to a tree.  Sold it later restored for like $200,000 I believe, not sure.  I know the difference, but if your in the hobby and have the cash, why not restore it so others can enjoy it?  I'm sure someone already is thinking GL.

Thanks tan top for putting the pictures on here!  I'm not even thinking of buying it, but I just wanted to see what y'all thought a small block project car with some good options was worth.  Oh and I know I may be shot for saying this, but when I get a charger it will be a general lee.... That's why I want a small block car so I won't be dis owned by this site haha! ;D

You may want to look at non SE's then while you're at it.   :icon_smile_big:

That's a shame.  Good thing hemi cars are rare and expensive or some of them would be sporting the uniform as well.

So did mine...

Bottom line is, Everybody seems to think rust free cars are out there. I got news. Guess what? If they are, they are on EvilBay, and if this thing on Evil-Bay might be worth $7K as is, then what makes you think you aren't gonna pay over $20K for a rust free version? They are going up on Evil-bay too for top dollar as too many are into Instant gratification today. Everybody seems to think they "Can't" do this, or "Can't" do that..I don't buy it, if you HAVE TO DO IT YOURSELF, you'd be surprized at what you actually can learn to do. Then, you won't be looking for the "Perfect" car for YEARS, when you coulda already restored this one in that time.

Sure, who wouldn't want a "Scuff and shoot" car where all you have to do is the fun stuff. They are not Any Cheaper or better. You either spend $600.00 on a rough car and dump $30K in it, or you will spend $20K on a car that you will have to spend another $10K on to make it yours.  NOBODY isd gonna sell you a '68-'70 Charger So cheap simply because you refuse to take some classes on bodywork and have to pay somebody. I didn't come out the womb knowing how to do bodywork/paint/interior/engine/trans/rearend/ work...

The days of buying one of these cars for peanuts and just driving them with little to no bodywork, engine, trans, rearend, glass, etc. are long gone.
Good luck, but I WISH all my cars i get were in half as good a condition. Just get a clear idea of how you want to restore it. Don't get to hung up in some of the high end restos on this site. It'll have you spending WAYYYY more than you originally intended. Just put it back together the way YOU want it and cruise it.

Did you change out the SE parts or leave them in Cooter?  The one at our place was just sprayed with tan paint everywhere inside so if someone ever wanted to take it back to stock, they'd have that much more to do.  I suppose even if someone had done the conversion properly though its highly likely they would have tossed those parts making it all the same in the end. :shruggy:

You seem to assume I had something of an SE to begin with....

Let's see....My car had NO TITLE. No Interior, no seats, no steering column, no steering wheel. no windshield, roof had holes in it, trunk was no existent as was the fuel tank, No engine/trans/rear, No brake drums or backing plates, one frame rail was bent like a taco, front core support was pretzel'd, Cowl was gone, no front clip, no interior wiring, and I'm sure I missed a few more things that were missing like the SE emblems.

Dayum!!  Got any pics?  Would be nice to see them side by side with pics of it in its current condition.

You did say it started as an SE, it was reasonable to assume there was more SE there than you actually had.

Lemme put it this way, I only have ONE PICTURE, as I bought it before the Internet/forum/everybody wants to see it thing happened. If you've seen my Before pics of CHRISTINE, she was in better shape and  was more complete. As stated above, I get the impression everybody thinks these cars are everywhere. It was voted the most popular Mopar musclecar IIRC, so That must be why they should be sold cheaper than say a rare 307 1969  Camaro ?
