Probably did see it but didn't for one minute believe it was going to land on him.

The problem is the hill.  They have to take an underpowered approach to make the landing, almost to the point of stalling.  Also, the strip is too close to the road, must be a private strip.

private strip and a private road. The airport has tried on multiple occasions to buy the land the road is on so they can control things like signs or lights. The owner has of course refused the sale of the land.
