A tsunami warning has been issued for coastal British Columbia following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck near Haida Gwaii on Saturday night, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was the possibility of "widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents."

The quake was centred 198 kilometres south-southwest of Prince Rupert at a depth of 10 km, the USGS said.

"A major earthquake occurred in the Haida Gwaii region (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands). It was felt across much of north-central B.C., including Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Quesnel and Houston. There have been no reports of damage at this time," Natural Resources Canada said in a statement issued Saturday night.

had aftershocks of 4.8 & 5.8 as well.....half way up the coast of BC between Washington & Alaska

An actual wave has been reported, but they did not say where or how big. If it has any size at all, we could at the very least lose power here.

Hopefully everyone along the coast is OK.

Surprising none of the major news channels are covering it yet.  Weather Channel done a report, but that is it.  Best of luck to everyone on the Pacific ring

prayers for everyone up there

30 centimeter wave predicted in central AK. I think we will be OK.

The fault that runs through this area connects with the San Andreas fault in CA. Hopefully it calms down soon.

The warnings are still in affect due to any possible aftershocks, but so far, so good.

Better to have a bunch of small ones than one very big one.  At least James Bond is getting his drink shaken, not stirred
