What was the worst muscle car produced?

OK, This is a ripoff of "the best muscle car" thread, but it could get interesting...

I would say the mid 70s Mustang, (remember the dressed up Pintos), except for the fact that I owned a Gremlin X. Worst handling car I ever owned! That car would swap ends just hitting a pot hole. Don't even ask about rain!

TheGhost

If we are going by the definition of Muscle car, I'd have to say the last of the GTOs in the mid 70s, 75 I think it was.  Nothing more than a Ventura wearing lipstick.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.  Especially if they have access to the internet.

That was one of the mid '70s ones the OP was mentioning.

Firstly, I'll say that I don't think they intended it be a "muscle car".  Secodly, my wife had one of those when I married her, and other than being very under-powered, it was actually kinda fun to drive, very "go-cart" feeling.

The later ones (starting in 1975) had better engine options and there was even a Cobra II that was kinda decent.

At least it was a two door........    :icon_smile_cool:

I don't know that it's the worst muscle car because of the 413 power plant but it sure is up there on the ugly scale.........it's so ugly it's cool!!

The 'Ventura GTO' is actually a decent looking car, not nearly the worst thing GM ever did.   I think the late 70's Chevelle is one of the goofiest looking 'muscle cars' ever.   And if Camaros count, the ugliest one was also that late '70's incarnation too.   Bleh.
[ŌŌ]ƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖ[ŌŌ] = 68
[ŌŌ][ƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖ][ƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖ][ŌŌ] = 69
(ŌŌ)[ƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗ](ŌŌ) = 70

I'm a practical kind of guy and looks are secondary to function. I would have to elect the Chevrolet musclecars because of their fragile drivetrains. 9 inch brakes, diaphraghm clutches, weak 4 speeds, jumping jack rear suspensions and second rate rear ends. You could pound on a Mopar all day and they wouldn't break, try that with a Chevrolet and they would start wheelhopping and pretty soon break something. Fords would blow up but they wouldn't break the transmission or rearend so they were right between Mopars and Chevies in the toughness dept.

Not sure if all these fit into the "muscle car" category but here's some of my least favorite:
Vega
El Camino
Fury
Gremlin
Rambler
Nova
Maverick
70-78 Mustang

Not too big on Darts and Dusters either... sorry.

I agree with the late 70's Camaro. Camaro had cheesy graphics and no performance.  I'll also add the Pontiac Trans Am Turbo.  Cool looks no umph

Maverick? One here with 302 and 4-speed. Hauls ass.
Must II? Had one in High school. 302 4-speed. Hauled ass.

Now, you wanna talk about Late seventies Corvettes with their anemic 130 HP 350 "Vette" Motors, with automatics....

the 68 to 70 chargers were the worst muscle car produced in general by dodge/chrysler if anyone knows the history you will know that they didnt know what to do to keep up with the mustang and camaro so they kept redesigning the front face trying to get the right formula to win races.  They got to desperate that they brought a car called, 'dodge daytona' in 69 and tried to rob folks of winnings from ford and chevy, but no luck so they discontinued that model after one year on the race track.

They found the winning formula in the 80s shelby turbo with hits smaller engine, turbo, and quick off the line it won the hearts of millions in the 80s and won races, finally, and hitting the 0-60 mark in 12secs something that dodge/chrysler could not accomplish in the early models where hitting 17 secs was happy to them......

I don't know if I cold pick a worst but I did always wonder about things like 67 Camaros with monoleaf rear suspension or 389 GTO backed with a 2 speed automatic and braked with 9 inch drums.

Based on your theory I have a couple of questions for you. Why are the 2nd gen chargers bringing so much money today? If the grilles are so bad, why are they bringing around $1,000 complete?(you said no one liked grilles in my thread) Dodge always sold fewer cars than Ford and Generic motors. IT had nothing to do with the body style, trust me.

Volare's make me natious. Especially the kit cars with bushwhacker flares.
71-3 mustangs are pretty awful too.

For me in the "muscle car" years -  1964-1972 I would have to say nothing strikes me as more ugly than the 1970-1972 Mercury Cyclone...   something about the grille just makes me want to never own one.

69 Charger with a six banger.  Doesn't get any worse than that.

A "Pony" car can certainly be a musclecar. Musclecar= Small/mid/large body with the biggest damn engine offered by a perticular manufacturer.

"Worst" musclecar can mean a bunch of different things to different people. Like ugly, weak, poorly built,etc...

Because looks are always part of the equation. It may be a subjective category but it's still a consideration.

That's why we're seeing 68 grills on 69 chargers.  There's an easy fix right there!  :icon_smile_big:

I agree here. Pontiac still had the Trans Am though.
Ford? The Mustang didn't qualify since it was 4 cyl and V6 for a few years.
AMC? The last of the Javelins had really funky styling.
Buick, Olds.... Nothing there. Chevy had the Camaro and the Vette. They were slow but they handled well.
