lower control arm pivot shaft-spinning when trying to torque it.

I have noticed a clunking sound in the front end of my 69 and narrowed it down to the passenger side lower control arm pivot shaft not being properly torqued down. Problem is when I try to tighten it the shaft spins. I have tried with the car in the air and on the ground and it still spins. The shaft pins and urethane bushings are about 8 months old so they are not worn down. Is there any easy solution to stop it from spinning? I thought about clamping the front vice grips but am worried that the threads will be destroyed in the process. Any ideas?

This is fairly common with the urethane bushings because there is no press-fit in the bushings to prevent the shaft from spinning. Try driving the lower control arm hard forward to seat the taper on the pivot shaft into the K-member hole.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Im going thru that myself,im changing bushings in mine so the arm was hanging, the previuos owner told me they were poly bushings and it was loose and spinning,I dont know if your at this stage but I removed the torsion bar clip and hammered the control arm backwards off the loose bushing, the bar went back, the arm slid off the shaft.I put vise grips on the shaft that had bushing metal sleeve on and loosened the nut, took dremel and cut sleeve off shaft-no more poly for me,MOOG....
This is gonna be cheap and easy......

I bet if you hit the brakes on and of hard as you are moving slightly you will here a clunk. I just finished taking my lower urethane bushing out and put rubber ones back in. Never again will i use urethane in the lowers again. Once i got my lower control arms off the hole shaft just pulled out of the bush by hand. Even if you do torque it down it will still move back and forth on the shaft. You can grab the shaft with some narrow multigrips while you tighten it.
