Could Progressive Really be this much Cheaper?

I have a couple of Nepali immigrant brothers that I have been helping out.

They got their drivers licenses more than a year ago. I helped them find and buy cars, get insurance, etc.

I just got them sigend up with American Family Insurance, it is what I have for my non-collector cars. But the premiums keep going up. After one year with them one guys monthly premium went from $127 to $145. He asked me to help him see how he sould save money on this premium. They were already a pretty much the minimum coverages and $500 deductibles. None of the agents suggestions for lower coverage or raising deductibles really made much difference in the premium amount for the coverage lost.

So we decided to get qoutes from other companies. Geico came in at exactly the same amount as AM Fam. But Progressive quoted him $66/month. I checked the detail quote and all of the areas and coverage amounts are covered and the same as the over quotes.

Can this be that Progressive is so much cheaper? It makes me nervous to let them change companies under these circumstances.

When I started driving 10 years ago, I was signed on Shelter.  I was paying $200/6 months. Two years later, I was paying $300/6 months.  After I graduated, it jumped to $400/6 months.  No claims or tickets.  Switched to American Family. $120/ 6 months. 1 year later  $180/6 months.  In 4 years, it went to $400 6/ months.  I went to Progressive. $127 6/months.  It stayed that away for 3 years until I got another vehicle.  Now I'm paying $320 6/months and it has been that away for 2 years with no claims or tickets.  Never had any tickets or claims.  Actually, my coverage is double of what I had than I had with the other 2.  Progressive wins in my book.

I'll second that. I have Progressive. The moron that plowed my Jeep also had Progressive. They have been stonewalling and sandbagging this injury claim for just shy of two years waiting for the statute of limitations to expire. Oh, and they were generous enough to pay a whole thousand dollars for a vehicle I can't replace for three times the settlement.

years ago i couldn't believe how much cheaper progressive was, then my son turned 15.5 yrs old, they wanted $2000 for 6 mths just to add him to my policy as a student.
i started shopping around and found that AAA gave me the same cost for a year premium that all the other companies do for a 6 mth premium.  been with them for 6 years now, no claims though.

once a year i still check rates and still can't beat AAA

I've had USAA ever since I started driving. Right now I'm paying about $115 a month for a 2007 Chevy 2500 heavy duty Diesel 4x4 truck and a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L. Both full coverage with a $1,000 deductible. I'm only 23 but knock on wood no tickets no accidents.

I'll have to get a quote from AAA & Progressive.

my son is 21, on his own policy and pays 180+ a mth for a 2012 v6 camaro, no tickets, no claims, but we are in a crime ridden neighborhood in the big city................

I pay for 6 months at a time. $487 for 4 vehicles. All have uninsured motorist, I have full coverage on my suburban and the rest are state min plus a little extra for medical and uninsured motorist.

I agree ! they take the money for premiums each month but anyone filing a claim is out of luck ! just think of WHAT IT'S LIKE IF A DRIVER INSURED WITH THEM  THEY WILL STALL OR TRY TO GET OUT OF PAYING FOR THE DAMAGE THEIR DRIVER DID. I have AAA and have been with them since 1972- 40 years WOW has it been THAT long ? man thet just got me thinking of where all that time went. AAA will go to bat for you anytime these cheapskate ins. co.s try to get off the hook. and i am sure progressive & the others want you to go to a body shop that will repair your vehicle with duct tape. After doing a little research, George Soros is NOT the major shareholder in progressive insurance, Peter Lewis still holds controlling interest.

I switched to progressive in about 96 because they had a better price then my then insurance company of state farm. I had a claim with state farm and they paid a far price and didn't drag it out. I then got broad sided in my van in 97 and progressive showed me news paper adds of vans like mine to determine value. They low balled me. I looked at two of these vans and they were pure junk and not even a fair comparison to what I lost. They held their ground on valve and could care less about me. I finally dumped them in 05 when I went shopping for insurance when I had to start adding my kids to my insurance. Its funny I ended up back with state farm. They were very reasonable to add my kids. When my daughter bought her first vehicle this year they moved her to her own policy at the rate we were paying for her.

Own separate policy. Bought a house in May and have all three vehicles set up with USAA on my own policy's. I know I get the good driver discount for no accidents or tickets and I also get the good student discount but I'm not sure if they are going to let me keep that discount on there because I recently graduated with my business degree and am no longer in school.

It's $76 a month for the diesel full coverage and like $46 a month full coverage for the 06 gmc half ton.

The problem with most of these ins. co.s is that they spend too much time advertising on tv which costs alot to begin with. How are they paying for that , with customers money thats how. When it comes to actually having to pay a real claim, they start cheaping out and not giving the policy holder what they have paid for & worse yet, if one of their policy holders is at fault, they refuse to give the "victim' of their insured a hard time bynot wanting to pay for a quality repair but want to go CHEAP with substandard parts the "lowest bidder" on the estimates will use. THESE ins. co.s advertise way too much & my insurance co. AAA does NOT advertise and in fact, when progressive and all those others claim they have lower rates, they always compare with each other and you NEVER see them comparing to AAA.
