70 Charger headlight door issue

Men (and women):

1970 Charger, everything new, just about done with the restoration and just chasing down a few loose ends.  One thing I am missing is the headlight timer relay (plugs into the green wire connection off the headlight relay) and if this is the source of my woes, then please let me know.  Mainly, I'm trying to figure out these damn headlight doors. It's the last electrical problem with this buggy.   Help me trouble shoot this as I'm not real familiar with 70s as much as I am the 68s and 69s.  Here's the sequence of events:

1. Car off, battery connected:  headlights go on and off as normal, doors stay down.  I think that's normal, no?
2. Ignition switch on, headlight switch off:  doors go up and then chatter as if the motor isn't stopping.  The relay is not chattering, it's the motor.
3. Ignition on, headlight switch on, doors go back down and then do the same thing: chatter as if the motor is still running.
4. Consulted manual, all wires are correct and routed correctly.  New relay (as stated) but original motor.
5. Scratched head.  Not knowing what is going on.  Thought to self, "Self, post this on DC.com and get answers."
6. Shook fist airborne in pumping motion and blamed it on Troy (hemi68charger) for reasons that are vast and complicated at best. :icon_smile_big:

So besides the humor, any thoughts?  I'm stumped :scratchchin:...stumpified...stumpification has set in on this one.  Also, where can I get the timer delay for the headlights?  Looks like it's a one port connection.

not that far on my restoration but i played with my motor a little to see if it was working.  it appears to me that one wire has power only when the lights are on and the other reverses the motor and only has power when lights are off.  there has to be some sort of internal switch that shuts off the motor so once the motor has has reached it's limit so it doesn't try to continue running.  not much help but i'll bet that's your problem.  hawkeye

Don't drive at night.  Or use the manual wheel on the motor to make them go up or down.  :shruggy:

but original motor.

Sounds like a problem with a limit switch in the motor. PM board member Topher. He's the headlight motor guru on this board.

But also check that link to the 70 site, even if you don't do the work yourself it's an excellent explanation of the whole thing and the knowledge could come in handy.

That link helped out immensely.  I think that may be the issue, the motor and internal switching.  Thanks guys, I'll let you know what I find. :2thumbs:

As an aside, I find it kind of interesting that your username has 68RR in it, your avatar is a 68 Charger, your sig lists a 69 Charger but your question is for a 70 Charger.

68RRFlyer

The user name is sort of an enigma wrapped in a riddle.  Like the Kennedy assassination......or something ;)  But if you must know, the 68RR part is because my first Mopar was a 68 Roadrunner, The Flyer part is because I'm a pilot (well, was a pilot), the 68 Charger in the avatar is a coworker's Charger I restored for him a few years ago, the 1969 Charger in the signature is my personal buggy, and the 70 Charger in question is one I am restoring for a customer.  All you wanted to know and more! :icon_smile_big:

Just to help out others, I found two problems:  First off, the wiring was reversed inside the new harness, although the colors are correct.  When you turn the ignition switch on, the headlight doors would go up.  So basically, it was a power feed problem.  So I swapped the two power wires around going to the motor and that solved that issue.  And the other issues was the internal part of the motor was pretty beat up:  gear, limit switches, and cams.  I tried to adjust the swithches as best I could, but it just wouldn't catch correctly.  So an NOS motor fixed the problem.  Easy fix with replacement, but the troubleshooting determied that: A) Wiring was reversed in a brand new harness although the colors were correct, and B) Limit switches out of adjustment.  So there you go!! Thanks again for the help gang.  :2thumbs:

I had the same problem with a Year One harness.  Made an adapter to switch the wires with a pigtail from Radio Shack
