Posting a pic you've posted before

Okay, I know how to post a pic.  But how do I post the same pic again somewhere else?  If I try to do it again, it says a file of that name already exists.  What I want to do is reference the same file, but I don't know how?

I've done it too. What I had to do, if its off your computer, change the file name by right clicking on it.

Yeah, I've done that a couple of times already.  But I figure there's got to be a better way?

there is, open a free acount at www.photobucket.com

Then you can host them from there. I do that too.

ACK!!! Don't do that! The whole purpose of disallowing the same picture to be uploaded multiple times is to save on bandwidth and storage. If you just change the name and re-upload the same picture you're compounding the problem. If you need to post the same picture more than once then please find a place to host them or learn to reuse the link.

I thought I had answered this earlier but I guess I didn't save the post. Find the picture you already uploaded and right click on it. Choose "Properties" from the list and you'll see the URL (it may be called "Location", "Address", or URL depending on your browser). Copy that address and paste it into your new post. It will look something like this: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=9217.0;id=14933;image If you're in the reply page or starting a new thread, there will be some icons above the box you're typing into. The one directly underneath the 'I' looks like a little picture. If you highlight the address that you just pasted and then click that button it will enclose the address with [img] tags. If you are using the quick reply box at the bottom of the page then you have to manually type in the [img] at the beginning and [/img] at the end. If you do it right the picture will show up like this:

The web doesn't work that way - you have to provide a valid path to the image for browsers to figure out where to get it from. When you upload a picture it not only sticks it on the server but it also generates all the code to display the image AND the download link underneath it. It's already done for you if you know where to look. The img tags already code a lot of the extra stuff behind the scenes that you don't even see. The real code to make an image display in a browser looks like this:
<img src="http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=8146.0;id=13625;image" alt="" border="0" />

If you already know the exact name of the file you can go directly to it as well:
[img]http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/attachments/tp_69_green_sunroof.jpg[/img]


The drawback to this is that you have to know that the image was uploaded AND the exact name. If the image was uploaded it should be in the attachments folder so this way should work. This doesn't work on smileys or avatars because they are somewhere else.

There are a lot of forums that don't even allow you to upload images at all because of all of the overhead involved (additional bandwidth) and the storage problems. The only way I can even allow it here is because there's a dedicated server running things. Of course, it costs 30 times more than a low budget site too. Any time someone can put forth a little extra effort on their part to reduce the load really helps.

Yes, I knew simply renaming an image and uploading it again was doing nothing but taking up extra space and thats why I asked.  I really like this board and all you do with it.  I know you don't hear it enough, but thanks.  We do appreciate it!  And thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

I was just thinking [no, I didn't hurt myself  ]  Talking about bandwith. Why don't you put a time limit on certain pic uploads,like the funny pics thread or the Chicks on whatever. I guess I'm kinda feeling guilty because I started two of them that got a bit large. 

Maybe let them stay posted for 30 days? Then send them packin'.  I don't believe anyone would have a problem with that. Just my
