How to search for a 440?

I found my car using AutoTempest, which makes it ridiculously easy to find any car you can think of for sale.

That said, soon I'll be hunting a 440 to build and drop in, but outside of forums like this and craigslist, is there a good/easy/reliable way to find people who just have motors for sale?    It takes hours of searching just to find a few late 70's low compression motors.   Where do you guys go when sourcing blocks?

Trip over them.  Word is around that my family is one of the few that deals in Mopar, people have them, they let us know.

Ghoste

Word of mouth is a good way.  Always be searching for them and always be letting it known that you will buy stuff.

I got three I'll sell...Course, a HP/High Compression factory engine is of no use to you if you are gonna just stroke it out anyway.  Some cheaper some not so cheap.
" I have spent thousands of dollars and countless hours researching what works and what doesn't and I'm willing to share"

Ghoste

Yeah, if you are stroking it, one of those low compression ones is a great place to start.  (maybe worth looking at anyway if you are rebuilding and not just dropping in as is)

hatersaurusrex,

Look no further!  I have a one sitting in my garage.

Where do I find them?  Detroit, trip over the damn things and I'm not looking!  They're everywhere I tell ya!

On occasion I will come across a 383 or two and maybe a 318, but the 440's are everywhere, don't know why.

Isn't a 440 hp, from the factory just a bigger cam and a 4 barrel ?

Yes
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

The "HP" 440 usually had a double roller chain, Little hotter cam, better exhaust manifolds(HP), some had "Six Pack" rods, Little stiffer valve springs, Dual Exhaust...

Were the exhaust manifolds different?

Yes, HP manifolds were different than the lo-perf, C-body logs.
Check your local Craigslist, too. There's usually always a C-body for sale or someone selling off engines & parts.

Or, try a wanted ad here on DC.com.  :yesnod:

That's what I was thinking. On my local CL, I see about 15 options with a simple "mopar 440" search in auto parts.

Bottom line is any reg 440 can be easily made into a HP engine. Extra's, like the HP exaust manifolds usually never come with a engine.  Most HP engines did not always have the heavy 6 pack rods either.

Ghoste

Compared to some engines, every 440 is already hp.  :D

There is always the ultra-rare 440 6-pack Hemi

Holy smokes!  I want one of those.   If I placed a wanted ad on craigslist I probably would get more than a few responses :)

The elusive 'hemi wedge'...  I wonder if it comes with 'solid hydraulic lifters' and 'carbureted fuel injection'?
