Best Way to get a 3rd gen in the 11's

ok guys spring is coming up here (not soon enough)  but im having second thoughts about puttin the 440 is a heavy third gen or looking at something lighter (omni maybe  :icon_smile_big:)

neways whats it take to get a third gen into the 11's and be able to drive it on the street.

lots of factors here and looking for input, can i put the charger on a diet and get say 3500-3600 lbs out of it?

suspension and tire can obviously be changed but keep it on the street on the nice days

whats bring this about: a certian female friend ( :icon_smile_wink:) just purchased a 2003 Mitsu Evo 8 and absolutly worships imports (always the argument about hp/L) and basically i need to stay ahead of it (runs 14.2's stock) wayy ahead of it

so time for speculation what suspensoin and combination can get my charger into 11.7 territory with a 440/727 (would 500 hp be enough?)

andy74

lots of gear,lots of convertor!

i would say by seeing the engine build you have done that with a decent gear, and a hi stall convertor,as long as you get traction youll be damn close to the mid 12s. good springs,a good sized rear tire, and removing as much weight as possible should all get you close to your goal, and give us pics of you smoking that ricer!

Get a copy of "old reliable" written by Don Dumalage.  He has a third gen charger running in the 11's,  and his book details EXACTLY what is needed to get there.  And it won't cost an arm and a leg to do it!

You can buy "old reliable" on e bay

Kryp2nitE

wait is that the story of that brown charger? that was for sale a few years back in canada, i remeber it saying ti inspiried "old reliable" but thought it was just a saying

ive got a 3k stall converter is that enough? more than 4.10 gear needed? (ive got 4.56 as well)

edit" HOLY SHIT i almost bought that car b4 i found my third gen, iwonder what happened to it now...

andy74

i think youll be off to a good start l,but a 3500 to 3800 would probably be better, and if i remember correctly you have a solid cam-use the 4.56s

Duey

Cal-tracs and get spring shackle mounts moved inboard to put on 295's...drag radials...Ron has a fave set, can't recall the make (drag radials)...

4.10 with a 3800 stall should work wonders...4.56 is pretty deep.

remember its not about how fast, but how quick.  I ran spooled 4.56's in a 71 charger, gutted interior, 440 with 10.5 to 1 trw 2295's, tunnel ram and 2 600 eddy's on top, 2" supercomp headers, 516 heads with large valves (no porting or polishing) and a .509 cam.  The car ran a best of 12.17 at 108mph.  The hydraulic cam was holding me back from the 11's.  You get a solid cam and 11's is easy, real easy.  And if you cant get 11's on 500 hp, then you are either driving a dumptruck or you arent a driver.

Here is a pic of the book.  It is a great book, and it takes the guess work out of building a powerful mopar.

It basically comes down to enough HP & Traction to make 11s happen

andy74

i have a copy of that old reliable book coming, i found a guy on e bay who is selling like 15 of them

Kryp2nitE

ok ive found mopar performance's recipe for a 11.0 second bracket engine for a RB in a 3500 lb mopar

Dual exhaust
Viscous Fan
Windage Tray
38* timing
Headers and collectors
2.08/1.74 valves
Viton Valve Seal Package
Single Plane Intake
Centerline Cam
Rolller Chain and Sprokets
Wide Gap Plug (.040)
HP Oil Pump Spring
ALuminum Water Pump Housing
Ported Heads with 3 angle valve job
10:1 Compression w/ forged pistons
MP 528 mechanical cam w/ matching rockers and lifters
Titanium Retailers
Rocker Shaft Springs
6 pack intake and carbs
Racing Ignition Box
Dual Eletronic Fuel Pumps in parallel P4007038
Lightweight Starter
1/2 Modified Oil Pickup
Crank Scraper
Deep Oil Pan
Chrome Moly Retainers
HD Rod Bolts
Race Coil
Battery In Trunk
Fresh Air Scoop

my question is::
how much do the bumpers, hood and front bench seat weigh in a 3rd gen?
what am i going to lose from going to a new modified holley 850 vs the 6 pack?
what size headers and what the usual oversize on RB heads? (since the heads i ahve are already oversized)
cam someone explain rocker shaft springs im unfamiliar with the term.
this was from a mopar performance Engines book from around 1991, what should be updated?

Kryp2nitE

ok next thought could i do 9.5:1 compression with dual holley blues and spray it?

thoughts?

Runner

nitrous and slicks will be the cheap easy way to get it done.

here is a 11.80s recipe
452 lowdeck
kb pistons 10.1 cr
comp xe282s solid lifter cam
stock heads with a good valve job and the giudes cut down for the higher lift cam
headman 1 3/4 headers
tm6 intake
holley 750 dp
t/a 10 medium converter
4.57 gears
29x9 hoosier slicks   could easily run a 4.10 gear and a 26 inch slick end result isthe same, infact i went with the 29 inch tires to kill some gear.
in a 71 roadrunner weighs 3750 with me at the track, car idles nice and is a peach to drive.

add holley hp main body and ootb eheads and its gone 7.33 1/8 mile, should go 11.50 1/4 mile.

71 roadrunner 452 e heads  11.35@119 mph owned sence 1984
72 panther pink satellite sebring plus 383 727
68 satellite 383 4 speed  13.80 @ 102 mph  my daily driver

:iagree:

A set of 4.10's/3500+ stall, good traction and a legitimate 475hp will do the job. The key is a good set of heads and the related components to make it all work together. The new M/T drag radials are awesome as a dual purpose street/strip tire.

the engine will be up to spec, the stall i found out was 3200

what do we define as having "good" traction?

more than?:

11.5 x 30.5 tires
super stock springs and hangers
3" wheel studs
Drag shocks
Deep Trans Pan
Sub Frame Connectors
Adjustable Pinion Snubber
Sure- Grip

Chryco Psycho

removing or just moving weight can help try what you have & see if more is needed to make it hook up hard

I THINK ALSO ADDING SOME STROBE LIGHTS, NOS DECALS AND SUB WOFFER WOULD HELP...

DOESN'T ?

don't forget the chrome air breather, valve covers, water pump, timing cover, valley pan, oil pan, and most important of all...the DIPSTICK!! if you add all of these components i swear you will be running probably closer to 9's...i know by buddys roommate's sisters boyfriends uncle had a 440 HEMI sixpack in his 73 charger from the factory and after making these few improvements was the fastest car in the world..of course i odn't have any pictures because he only drove it at night, and it's not for sale because when he died, he was burried in it...o well though  :icon_smile_tongue:
