Hi Tan Top,           12 July 2022

Thanks for posting all the photos. Makes us wonder where all those Daytona's, C500's and Super Bird's ended up; please don't tell us the "Crusher."

Have a question: What gear ratio did the Daytona's and Super Bird's run on the high speed tracks? We're pretty sure they used the 8 3/4" third member, just need the gear ratio. We're sure it wasn't a 4.89, thinking along the lines of 2.73 or taller. We want to find the tallest gear set for our 68 Hemi Road Runner which will be running a 572" 800 hp FHO Hemi driving an 8 3/4 rear. We want to go Fast, get Great Mileage and Not burn rubber.

We appreciate your expertise. Thanks in advance.

  no trouble at all posting the pictures , glad you all like looking at them as much as i do ! we are all mopar nutts :yesnod:
the highest  over the counter  mopar  gear ratio for the 8 -3/4 was  2:76 as far as i know , not sure back then if you could get a  higher aftermarket  gear    back in the day  or ... but dont quote me on this , i think  taller was not available because of the ring gear or the pinion would not fit  inside the center section, i might have this round the wrong way or getting confused with something else , i did have tons of tecnical information , pictures , diagrams, lits of vins , saved  but lost the lot whan my  computer blew up back in 2013.
i dont think any wing car used a 2:76 on the banked nascar track , think it was too tall given the tire height &  at what RPM the Hemi could pull at what track with the amount of power back then ,  think they used a 2.94 , but went with a 3:08 ratio , i use to think they all used a 2:76 or 2.94  for the banked super speedways & was surprised with a 3:08 rear think even a 3:23 was used or tried. as mentioned i could be remembering what ive read wrong or getting confused with something else.   the Aero Guys on here  :coolgleamA:   will probably know more  & or the accurate details as to what they ran back then. i await to be corrected
as far as i know chrysler offered a 2:45 ration on a 70 charger  not for a 8-3/4  but   with a 8-1/4 axle i think.  pretty sure there is a aftermarket 3.23 ratio for the Dana 60 now .
with your road runner  is it a 4 speed i forget, the quickest easiest option would be try a  2:94  or 2:76 center section ,
 might want to think a 5 speed manual trans or a  Gear venders on a mopar 833 4 speed ,  or  with a 727  &  use a or 3.55 .
its or was a fairly common swap to use a 9 inch ford axle , because of the vast amount  of gear ratios if you  want to keep the stock type 833 four speed & 727 trans lots of things to consider,  i await to be corrected on any of this   :popcrn:

Hi Tan Top,             25 July 2022

Just saw your reply to our third member gear question.

Currently, the Six-Pack has the RR's 8 3/4 in it, which has a 4.89. Fine for the Drags but sorry for the street. The RR has the Six-Pack's 9 3/4 Dana with the stock 4.10. We are not going to touch that as we will swap it back where it belongs then figure out what gear we will put in the RR's 8 3/4. It originally had a 3.23, which we still have.

We'd really like to get a gear around 2.76. We have a Ford 2.73 R & P for our police cars. Both came with 3.08. We changed out the 3.08 on our first Stang for a 2.73 and got that beast cruising 85 mph in fifth gear just under 2K rpm. That car was a 5 speed with a new BW tran that had a higher 5th than stock. Took that car on a 3000 mile trip and averaged 27.1 mpg for the whole trip. About 600 of those miles were in town driving at the initial destination (Akron Ohio).

We're not interested in initial acceleration, top end and fuel mileage is what we're aiming for. I'd like to shoot for a top end of 200 + but have my doubts the RR can do it; the front end is too blunt and will be pushing too much air.

The only Mopar we had with a 4-spd was the Hemi Cuda which had a 4.10 9 3/4 Dana. The RR, SB and Daytona have 727 trans. The rear ends in the RR and Daytona were 8 3/4, 3.23 and 3.55 respectively. The SB's third member is a 4.10 9 3/4 Dana.

Plans are to return the SB to original with the few dings acquired in storage over the past 53 years repaired. The engine will be rebuilt with high end racing internals so it can survive on pump gas. All the original internals will go with the car when we sell it.

The RR is getting the new 572 Hemi and it's original 426 Hemi rebuilt. It'll have two complete engine, transmission and K frame assemblies for plug and play swaps. The original Hemi will be spec'd as stock but with high end racing components.

Thanks Tan Top for taking the time to gather the info and post it. Sorry it has taken us so long to acknowledge your help. Please Pardon My Faux Pas!

oh right  you have a  727 trans, think the quickest simplist  plan  would be,  use a 29" maybe 30" tire with a 2:94 rear  or 2:76 , in  a 472  center section or a 489 , the 489 is bit more messing about if your swapping ring & pinion your self because of the crush sleave IMO , although think there is a conversion parts kit for that now to replace the crush sleeve with shims,  ive not kept up with the latest developments on what available mainly because i have a 472  ;).  the 2:94  & 2:76  ring & pinion gear sets are not available  from anywhere on the aftermarket ,(wonder if  you could get that ratio custom made)  you will have to search for a good  used center section & go through it  , or find  NOS  that ratio , there is prolly quite a few still out there ,  make sure its a ten spline  pinion yoke,  if you have a 29 spline already change it to a 10 spline , ( even though your not launching is with slicks of the dragstrip IMO why take a chance  :Twocents:. same time make sure use new good quality 7290 universal joints , dont think there is any nead for the  larger sealed 1350s , besides stock size have grease nipples  :yesnod:,  doubt you will find a good used  2:94 or :76  with a sure grip,  dont think the guys on the high banked tracks used a sure grip , just had a open rear.. Again i await to be corrected  :yesnod:). IMO would still have a sure grip with those gears, ( FWIW i have a 2:94 sure grip 472 center section in mine)   i would get  real good drive shaft made up or the original sent to a specialised shop & have it balanced right to the last .000000  :P. think i would use a tight real good quality torque converter !  stock stall or maybe get a custom made one  tell the shop what your trying to/ want to do,  let them know rear gear,  hp & torque at what rpm, weight of car  etc dont think your need to go crazy giving them spects of everything as you not going for 1/4 mile  , again i await to be corrected on any of this i'm far from a expert of torque converters. would have the largest custom made radiator  that will fit  with out cutting anything , unless thats not a biggie, then biggest radiator possible , would still have the trans cooler in the radiator but use a  large external cooler to maybe even with its own electric cooling fan , even though your not  going to be using a loose  converter which does heat up the fluid more. better it be prepared , be safe than sorry as the saying goes IMO

Aero426

Same car, about 2005.    I think Tony from Tony's Parts had the pic.   The older photo on the bottom is from the Milwaukee area.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHF7W4BUuxE  cant ever remember seeing this particular coverage of the 305ci Daytona

ive often wondered, whats mentioned in this video, that the daytona might of been damaged / spun  out delibberately,  for it to be only a one race deal & not to come back,  because it looked obvious before the 22 wrecked looked like it was giving a good account of its self  :scratchchin:  & would of been worth while still to entre it in the next race etc  :shruggy:
