I want a 2nd Gen Charger really bad but due to storage limitations and the economy gamble I am thinking about going with something cheaper and still fun in the mean time.

I don't see much about the 71 RR,GTX ,or Satellites but I do like them. My question is does anyone know the problem areas to look at on these cars? Also is there much resale value on these cars? I want a 2 door v8 to enjoy without breaking the bank but to be able to sell it when the economy picks up and I find a 2nd Gen Charger.

I have a family friend that is going to sell his 1971 satellite. The body from what I can tell looks very nice, I have not got to look underneath it yet. It has a 383 engine in it and I am pretty sure it is not the correct engine for this car. It is a column shift and bench seat.

If i got the car I would like to swap out the wheels with some torque thrust wheels and possibly change the hood out to a gtx or RR hood.

That's a great second choice for most people, hence, I kind of doubt you'll find one much cheaper than you would a 2nd gen Charger. But if you're getting it from a friend your chances are obviously better. The one thing you need to consider though is parts availability. Due to the popularity of the 2nd gen Charger (particularly the 68-69) parts are plentiful. I doubt the same can be said for the 71 Satellite.

This is coming from someone that wanted a 69 Charger and messed around with a 71 Challenger only to never be satisfied because it was not what I truely wanted, The 71 Satellite will not be that much cheaper in the long run.  :Twocents:
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Personally, I would stick to the plan and get the car you want.  Economy is not getting better, it is likely going to get much much worse.  Hate to say this but there will be plenty 'toys' for sale out of necessity so save your pennies.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Mopar Muscle just published their readers poll of the best mopars, guess what was number one...the '69 Charger.  This is such an iconic car, I really don't see prices getting any better on them.

Yes, the 71-74 Plymouths, and 71-74 Chargers too for that matter, can be a lower entry price to get into the hobby in some instances, but like Indygenerallee said, its still not a 2nd gen and may not satify the bug. Unless they are willing sell it dirt cheap, it might be better to wait.

Yeah, I passed on a 69 Satellite I could drive for a charger I couldn't drive.  I'll be driving it soon though. :2thumbs:

I see a 71 Charger listed local here for $1500.00 if you are interested.

The 71 cars are a lot nicer to drive than the 70 and olders. They seem to handle a bit better, less wind noise etc. If the 71 doesn't need much you could just drive it for awhile and figure out if old cars are for you or not. The 71 is probably complete too. Finding a second gen Charger for a reasonable price and then buying all the parts to make it complete will send you to the poorhouse.

Is it a Satellite you want though or a Road Runner or GTX?  Because one will be cheaper to buy than the others but likely cost as much to keep on the road.

The car I am looking at will be a Satellite. I would love a road runner or gtx but they price close to the chargers.
