I've done some searches on here to see what people are doing to protect their repro fuel tanks and it seems like there are a lot of different opinions.  I just received a new tank for my '72 from Spectre.  It seems to be a quality part.  Here is the response I got from tech support in regards to painting/coating their product:

Hi Sir,

The tank is made with Ni Tern (special anti-corrosive steel) with a supplemental film of oil. Spectra Premium Industries recommend to leave it as it is for warranty purpose. If you want to go ahead and forget about the warranty, just wipe out the oily surface with oil remover product (do not sand the tank) and apply whatever coating you wish to put on.

What's the extent of the warranty? If it's only a year or so I'd be tempted to coat the Ni terne with something other than "a supplemental film of oil."

I bought my tank right after getting the car and since then I decided to completely take it apart for restoration. I figured that whatever warranty it came with (if any) is probably long gone so I went ahead and cleaned it, scuffed it with 0000 steel wool and clear coated it with matte.

On a partially related note, are there ways to protect the inside of the tanks now that we are being force fed the ethanol fuels?

Did I read somewhere that there was a POR15 product for the inside of fuel tanks?
