I believe the slot goes in line with the cam like a 440 but in all trueth the slot can go anyway and index the dist to #1 plug and set your advance with the engine at TDC#1.

Pretty sure its the same, parallel with the cam.

But as stated, you can put it wherever you want as long as its indexed correctly. Mine for example, needed more room because the dist cap clamps were hitting the valve cover when we went to advance it.
