The Space Shuttle Endeavour is being shuttled to Moffett Field tomorrow morning on a farewell flight http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Space-Shuttle-Endeavours-Salute-to-Moffett-Field-170213426.html. I hope to get a few good photos of the flyover, so I will be on my roof at 9:00 am sharp.   ;)

It is sad to see it end.  I am curious if it may start up again say. . . after November.  :D

I doubt it, just not sure why they ended the program without anything to take its place.

That's pretty cool.  Unfortunately, that'll probably be the last time it's up in the air.  Too bad I didn't get to see it launch in person.  Seen them on t.v. :coolgleamA: :2thumbs:

Dude awesome pics. :2thumbs:

I got too see it from my work, but it didn't fly close enough to take good pics with my phone  :rotz:

I was fortuanate to see it up close in the late 80's when it was refuling in Texas.

That is one BFM

Amazing a 747 can even fly with the shuttle on its back. The Shuttle is no small piece of hardware.

End of a ERA. I'm sad to see the shuttle fleet retired, never to visit space again.
I'm hoping to see it on display in LA some day.

Got to see the last Discovery Launch and landing last year. Hate to see them retire without a   replacement.

I wonder how much that Space Shuttle weighs ?

About 190,000  lbs empty.  It is heavy for its size, about the same size as a DC 9 that weighs about 65,000 lbs empty.

The 747 can lift that much if you don't fill its fuel tanks all the way, but you would also have the extra wind drag of the orbiter. I think they can only go about 1000 miles at a  reduced altitute below 15,000 feet vs 6-7000 miles and 40,000 feet alt. with passengers /cargo.

my buddy and I were talking about this yesterday (neither one of us is particularly well versed in the field of aeronautics, so...) and I posited the theory that since the shuttle is pretty much a massive lifting body that was designed to glide, it kinda "assists" with its own transportation atop the 747. I dunno, I could be completely wrong.

True, but Obama canceled the replacement rocket program.
