Hey guys I plan on rebuilding the lower part of my '70 steering column and maybe replacing the lower bearing as well. Any lessons learned anyone would like to share before I begin

just the seal cover will be a headache to install. Use a pair or C clamps to keep it in place tight and then punch the tabs

this is not the year we are talking about but method and tips are the same:

The lower bearing, at least on B&E Body cars, is not what you show in the picture. It is a round piece of plastic held in by a wire clip. The bearing there is what I have run into for 69 & prior stuff. Depending on configuration of column the entire thing has to be disassembled for lower bearing. Seal cap can be a PITA to do right. The cross piece that holds the shoes can be a challenge also as it is typically pressed into place.

Thanks guys. I think I'll skip the bearing and  just do the bottom end

Sorry, I have no advice, just questions. Where does the smallest pin go in a '68? I am 99% sure my coupler has never been apart (until I took it apart the other day) and I cannot find that little pin anywhere.

Orange Bird

The little pin goes in the body of the coupler after assembled. It keeps the shoes from pulling back out. If you look on the body where the seal is clamped into place you will see a small hole. Put it there but do not drive it all the way through, flush with the outside and stop.

Okay, I don't have a hole in the coupler body. Oh well, I guess I'm not going to worry about it since it wasn't in there from the factory. Thanks.

Rolling_Thunder

The little pin is not present in all couplers...    I believe it started in late 1968 - my early 68 car does not have one   :Twocents:
