Wings in 1972?

Here is a photo of The King racing in 1972.  On the right side you can see the nosecone of the #17 Dodge Daytona sneaking into the picture.  I know that the final aero year in Nascar was 1971, so does this mean that this is a USAC race?  I didn't realize that Richard ran USAC races because there seemed to be a Nascar event every week ( sometimes two) back then and he wouldn't have time.

Actually, that's a USAC race and the #47 Ramo Stott Plymouth with a 426 hemi in it....

They had so many restrictions on them that they were uneffective.  305ci limit was put on all cars.  Superbirds had so much weight added to them, they couldn't compete. That's what happens when Chrysler comes up with a good idea, and the rulebook has to change to shut the other people up.

Yes, this is the 1972 Pocono USAC race.    Petty ran his conventional Road Runner against unrestricted Hemi powered Superbirds.  Richard DNF'd and McCluskey won the race in the #3 Superbird.   Petty was quoted in the Autoweek race report back then as saying, "I would have liked to have run a Superbird, but I couldn't find one."    

I am pretty sure the Pocono Race was a special deal with full FIA sanction and was a scheduled off week for NASCAR.  Marcis and the Penske Matador ran as well as a couple other NASCAR drivers.   I think the promoter paid appearance money to Richard which led USAC stars Jack Bowsher and Don White to stay home and not compete.

I'd guess the 43 ran unrestricted, per USAC rules.    Any idea what the 43 ran in qualifying?

Qualifying order was:

1. McCluskey - Superbird
2. Hartman - cheated up '72 Charger with the laid back windshield
3. Dallenbach - #11 Superbird
4. Petty - '72 RR
5. Ramo - #47 Superbird

Correct, no restrictor plates on any cars.

Richard qualified 4th, but I don't know the speed.  Pole (Roger McCluskey) 3rd (Wally Dallenbach) and 5th (Ramo Stott) were all SuperBirds.  Roger lead 180 laps, Richard lead 13 and Wally lead 7, and those were your race leaders.

Roger was running laps near his qualifying speed late in the race.   The crew was trying to slow him down as he had a four lap lead.   He flat blew everybody away.    Petty, Ramo and Dallenbach all DNF'd.    One of the few races that Ramo did not finish in the Bird.

So Nascar actually had weekends off back then?  I figured that they never had a week off, and like I said...sometimes ran events in the middle of the week at some obscure track, but it was still a points paying sanctioned Nascar event. That's how The King racked up 200 wins.  Most of the teams couldn't keep up that kind of schedule, especially the privateers.

Richard et al ran the USAC Pocono race in prep for the 1st Nascar Pocono race coming in 73.  If memory serves Richard won that one.
