What do you consider the must drive roads?

If you had to do a road bucket list what would it be?  Not the destinations or stuff along the way or rally's or Power Tours or anything like that but the must drive stretches of road?  Route 66 should be an obvious one for car guys in North America but what else?  The Pacific Coast Highway, the Autobahn I'm thinking?  Would the Nurburgring count?  The route used for LeMans?  Monaco?
What are your dream roads?

The Pacific Coast Highway, Morro Bay to Monterey, is for real. Having lived there I drove it many times. It's always a dream ride.

2013 Dodge Challenger RT, Hemi, Plum Crazy
2014 Ram 4x4 Hemi, Deep Cherry Pearl
1968 Dodge Charger, 318, not much else
1958 Dodge Pick Up, 383, loud
1966 Dodge Van, /6, slow

I'd say some of the highways in Montana.  I here some of them have an unlimited speed limits plus there's the open plains and mountain scenery.  Spring time would be the best time to go.  U.S. 1 and U.S. 101 would be fun as well.  Of course, any road can be fun if there wasn't idiots and cops.

For anyone visiting Australia, "The Great Ocean Road" in Victoria is a must see with spectacular scenery and plenty of sights along the way.
And at the end of a most enjoyable drive you're greeted by  this................
"The Twelve Apostles" ( or sadly what's left of them)

Tomorrow is promised to no one.......drive your Charger today.

JB400

That's a nice  view.  It must be nice to have that view nearby.

Fred

Thanks stroker400 wedge.    Only one of many beautiful spots throughout Victoria.
It's a beautiful world we live in.  :2thumbs:

No argument there. Glad we're alive to enjoy it, and here's  :2thumbs: to letting the next generations enjoy it as well.

I've done the Great Ocean Road too Fred.
What a great drive that is!

Also the Nullarbor Plain is a treeless plain that is worth the hike if you're ever in Oz.

Coast hwy between San Fran and Washington (not hwy but driving the dunes near florence, or). Driving on the beach in pismo beach. the drive through the giant redwoods was also nice. "going to the sun hwy" in glacier national park. Bear tooth pass btw billings, mt. and yellowstone park and of course hwy 14 btw Cody wy. and Dayton (thru granite pass), especially in an SRT8  ::). Jasper parkway btw Banff and Jasper.

As for Europe.  Anything in Sweden is great because it's not only a beautiful countrym they also have the smoothest roads you can imagine.  Anything in Austria, Switzerland and parts of Germany because it's so friggin' stunning there.  (if you like nature that is)

Nurburgring is only fun if you can keep up, and there's some insane bikes and cars there.  Autobahn was a lot of fun every time I drove it but in the end doing near 150 mph and getting passed by cars so fast you can't recognize them is a bit daunting.  I'll stick to the scenic routes.

As far as home sweet home, the Michigan UP is absolutely gorgeous as is the north part of the LP.

The F1 circuit in Monaco was a fun drive for sure..
Driving along the mediterranian from Italy to Spain is probably the most beautiful roadtrip I have ever taken.. Lots of short tunnels through the mountainside and the view is amazing..
The autobahn is great fun, but you have to watch out, since some of the cars come up behind you so fast, it's easy to get the way.. I got overtaken while I was doing 130 mph, and it looked like I wasn't even moving..
I drove from Demmark to Oslo in Norway last year, and most of that trip was pretty amazing also..
When driving from Schwitzerland in to Italy you cross the Alps, and the trip down the Alps in to Italy is also very impressive.. Lots of sweeping hairpins and stunning view.. On the return trip I raced my father in law across the Alps in the middle of the night, we didn't see any other cars, and had a blast..
We drove to Prague about 6 years ago, and the stretch from the Czech border is down a small mountain ridge, which is actually a challenging piece of road.. Great fun if your in to braking and cornering..  ;)

NZ. is a beautiful country. The drive from Chritchurch to Queenstown through the Canterbury Plain (especially in late Autumn) is stunningly beautiful. It's a tapestry of golden, russet hues that the wife couldn't get enough of and then the snow capped mountain range of the Remarkables and Mt. Cook rivals any peak in Switzerland.
Saw no Hobbits only bungee jumpers.

Route 66 is on my bucket list. If I don't get that done prolly the Old Lincoln Highway.

bull

Route 66 really is a trip, and by trip I mean both traveling and a great experience. I haven't traveled much of it but if you choose your sections you can enjoy all the great memorabilia people have created to make a living there and all of the abandoned businesses along the way. The scenery can be awesome too.

Route 101 is very cool too. Being from Oregon I've traveled it many times. We did a big section of it last spring when we went down to CA to see the redwoods.

Another one I highly recommend is the Grand Circle in Utah which can also include portions of Route 66 if you plan it right. : http://www.utah.com/nationalparks/grand_canyon/grand-circle-itinerary.htm

A few weeks ago in mid-August I did the following -

Splugenpass
http://goo.gl/maps/yStfa

Oberalppass
http://goo.gl/maps/0sd9i

Furkapass
http://goo.gl/maps/m1IOi

Grimselpass
http://goo.gl/maps/7vupS

Grand St. Bernard Pass
http://goo.gl/maps/4Sozg

First 4 were great, the St. Bernard was okay, but we did the tunnel route instead of over the col (the true pass).  This was as many passes as I could cram into our trip and as much wife aggro as I could manage (she was getting car sick  :icon_smile_blackeye: ).  I would definitely put driving in Switzerland and/or Austria on the list.

We had a Citroen C3 diesel, which was fine with two of us.  It had a tall single windshield that went back to the B pillar.  Lots of motorcycles, some bicyclists, and a few smaller campers (that did respectably on the hills, considering).  An unexpected bonus was the smell of the fresh cut hay, wildflowers, and herbs at a certain elevation range - a real sweetness to the air.

Tilar

Not that you could feasibly take your Charger over there and drive it, but the road from Kahului Hi to Hana and then on around to Haleakala volcano then back to Kahului. Fantastic journey... for the passenger. So, if you ever go there with someone else, be sure they do the driving.  :yesnod:

I did that this past summer with the family, it was awesome!  We were jealous of everyone in their convertibles though!

I always wanted to cruise Mulholland Drive like Martin Sheen in California Kid. LEON.

Just beautiful. Here's one in Austria we did a few years back. There were no complaints from the wife except when she stood in a cow paddy.

Speaking of that, how about starting at Sunset Boulevard going through Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Hollwood Hills, and Santa Monica, then ending at the Pacific Palisades?

That's on my bucket list.  :drool5:

Fred

The drive through the Painted Desert near Winslow Arizona is out of this world. The soft hues in all the shades of the rainbow are just magical.

Thanks Fred. We did a 2800 mile round trip over 3 weeks in my 61 EK Station Sedan 138c.i. 3 speed wagon in 98, down the West Coast to Milford Sound and then Queenstown and Bluff and up through the guts and back via the East Coast road from ChristChurch, loved it. Will do it again in a motorhome when our daughter is a bit bigger.

Great Swiss pics guys  :2thumbs: , definetly 'must drive" country

Are there any "must drives" in Africa I wonder?  And what about South America?

Do you suppose I can interest some reality show producer in flying my Charger and I around the world to drive these roads.  We can call it Bucket List Cruiser.

As long as you include a ton of drama they'll likely be up for it yes.  Just don't start in Bolivia or you're not gonna get very far.

I think your show would get stuck on the travel channel at some late night hours and the only person that would watch would be some over weight couch potato that draws welfare and never worked a day in his life. :icon_smile_big:

No way cuz I'm gonna add stuff people want to see like whacked out celebrities, random female toplessness, psychics and a pop soundtrack from the most recent Disney discovery.  In the second season we'll add pyrotechnics and midgets.

JB400

Sounds cool than.  It'd probably be an HBO program then.  Or, it'd be my luck that it gets stuck on PayPerView. :eek2:

Just stick to the female toplessness, there is no need for all that other stuff to get good ratings.   :yesnod:

An appropriate name considering it might be the last thing you ever do.  I wouldn't drive a Tonka toy on those roads.

I'll just provide the sweaty interviews before and after on thsoe really bad ones.  I'll be in a studio somewhere and we'll get stunt doubles to deal with the cartels in Bolivia.  Now the cool stuff around the US I'll obviously do myself. :D

I see you've got your head screwed on right.   Now you're talking.  :2thumbs:

Throw in some mind altering drugs and the local forms of adult beverages.  Take along that clown van from Indy too!

 :popcrn:

For scenery I like the drive down to the FLA keys or blue ridge parkway in the Carolina.
For cool old towns, architecture, antiques, etc I like sections of US1 in New England (Maine) and 66 (with efforts finding old side road sections).
And look forward to doing something in the NW along the coast (N. Cali, OR, WA) someday.

Pismo would be fine, just lower the tire pressure to only a few psi and giver! Don't forget to wash the salt off when your done! :2thumbs:

All of them, one at a time.

some more of the road .it is in china

JB400

Dodge Charger in China.  That could be interesting.  As far as I know, the only charger they know of over there is the 99 concept made by hot wheels. :icon_smile_big:

Ghoste

You might be very surprised at the cars in China.  Perhaps not a Charger on every corner but there are a couple.
