Just got my 66 up and running, changes Trans  filter and fluid, when I take off its a little late amd hard shifting into 2nd. I've worked w a lot of Chevys and their Trans has a vacuum valve to help shift-does mine have something simular or could it be something else?
This is gonna be cheap and easy......

Is your linkage adjusted correctly, linkage should start to move as soon as the throttle moves?

Have you verified you have not overfilled the fluid?

Dodgerdallas

The fluid is ok and the linkage doesn't move till the passing gears hit

Dodgerdallas

The shifter linkage is fine slso

the linkage should have a spring pulling it all the way forward against the carb linkage

Ok I have 2 springs both Goin to the carb linkage, one of them needs to hook to the passing gear? ( I assume that's what it is).

Sorry
I'm so clueless but what does the spring do?
This is gonna be cheap and easy......

cdr

if the spring is not pulling the linkage the trans thinks that you are pushing on the gas pedal,so with the linkage pushed back the trans line pressure is higher, the travel that it moves controls line pressure & shift points,

To simplify, the slot in the top link needs to be pulled up snug against the carb stud at idle and the linkage needs to move rearward as soon as the throttle is opened.

The farther back the linkage is at any given throttle setting, the later and firmer the shift will be.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
