How do you rebuild the electric headlight motors? What causes them to stop working? Where would I get the parts? Dave.

ODZKing

There are several folks who do it.
Bryan (I believe) A383Wing in WA - and Topher, in NC.

Ghoste

The main cause of them not working could be either the operating relays burnt out or just the fact that they have hung out there in the grille exposed to the moisture and road crap for 40+ years.  If you want to do them yourself they aren't difficult but we do have a member on the site, username Topher, who specializes in rebuilding headlight motors and he is a fastback Charger owner as well.

DAMSR

Thanks. Where would I get the parts to do the job? I think I should be able to do it?

Ghoste

I haven't had to actually rebuild mine but I think the big thing is the gear drive portion in the end.  Have you determined for sure its the motors not working?  Not meaning to be patronizing in any way, just checking.

DAMSR

The left headlight rotates,I had a bad ground. I tested the 2 motors by running a hot wire from the battery to the plug into the motor. The right one does nothing. The one prong on the plug makes it open and the other makes it open.

Ghoste

Correct, and the third one is a ground.

Does anyone know where I go from here.I have been a body man for 30 yrs. and I think I could handel this job.

first you have to split the motor case, and then take out the guts of the motor...usually problem lies in burnt up thermal breaker and burnt armature windings

Topher rebuilds the motors complete, and I have new relay sets that go behind the glovebox.

I ruined 3 headlight motors trying to fix them myself back in the day....now I just let my buddy Topher fix mine
