I'm pretty savvy on Daytona's but what's special about a SB? I heard the rear window is diffrent? I thought it was a "poor mans wing car" that didn't need a rear window/plug/trunk mod...just throw on nose and wing and yer' done  :popcrn:

I suspected the windshield molding.
1) rear window from another vehicle or particular to the Bird?
2) Why coronet fenders? The '70 fenders used on the daytona make sense but seems the coronet fenders offer the same nose cone mating surface as a Satelite/RR?
3) any pictures?

Thanks in advance!

70 coronet has the wrap around bumper like the charger so they have the lip to mate up to the nose cone

OK....what makes a Daytona a Daytona! Just throw on a nose and a wing and youre done! At least the Daytona morphed from a 500 which already did away with the hidous Charger tunnel roof.  :eyes:

what a stupid question!!!!
wingless now, but still around.

Comparing a Superbird to a Daytona is like saying "they are the same, only different".   Each one has the same type of unique special pieces, (nose, wing, rear window plug, etc) but they don't interchange between the two models.

The Charger fender body lines do work on a Road Runner.    Road Runner fenders would not fit a nose cone.  But Dodge Coronet fenders luckily mated up with the body lines of the Road Runner doors.   The Coronet fender would not fit the Daytona nose; so a new Superbird nose was created.   The nose and wing design of the Superbird were a refinement of the Daytona aerodynamics, and also a small concession to the styling people.

Benji

I've always found it interesting that 1970 Dodge fenders were available in 1969 to build a Superbird, and also that they fit a Plymouth!  Some behind the scenes cooperation between the two divisions undoubtedly.

It was more dumb luck than cooperation between divisions.   The 1970 designs were locked down well in advance of starting on the Superbird project.    Things really did not get rolling until mid-1969.

There are approximately 300 parts and modifications that differentiate a Superbird from an identically equipped Road Runner.

Thanks guys,  didn't know about the Coronet fenders...makes sense though. Aero, I know the Daytona and SB were  diffrent and non-interchangeable, but to be honest I always thought the SB was a less expensive version figuring MOPAR did most of the R&D on the daytona and imported lessons learned to to the SB...and made so many more SB's in '70. I've Always viewed them as equals.

Arnie...I woundn't have thought there were that many mods to change a RR to SB..thx!

I wouldn't say that a Superbird is a poor man's Daytona; rather, I'd say it's the other wing car.

My pleasure.  I asked myself that same question not too long ago.  If you parked a 6 pack or hemi runner next to an absolutely identically equipped superbird, just what parts would be different?  (not just the obvious stuff).  Stay tuned. I will be asking many questions about each of those parts soon.

your '300' number would have to include hardware...I got bored and added up the major stuff and got to like 77 bird-specific pieces.

Arnie Cunningham

Yes hardware, modifications, everything that would differ if two identically optioned cars were side by side.  Sort of a more complete listing of what was in the product planning tech services fleet engineering doc.
