Hiking in New York City (With Photos)

I'm originally from New York City so I love going back there every now & then, like last week when I went there with my wife & daughter to see this new public walkway that opened a short while back. It was an old, elevated freight line that was closed for good around 1980 or so. I was always fascinated with trains, so mixing that with NYC is another interesting combination. About a year ago I was in NYC & on my way home when saw a new staircase built next to this elevated track. I also saw people walking up on the trestle & was curious about it. I googled it & discovered that a new walkway was made using this trestle & just had to go look.

The biggest attraction for me, was that parts of it pass through the second floor of a couple of buildings. I was dying to see it, so we made a day of it. Went to the Highline, then to J&R Music, then to the World Trade Center to see the new building under construction, & last was a great Japanese restaurant we've never been to. As much as I love going here & miss it, I don't think I could ever move back. Not unless I hit the lottery & can buy my own building with a multi-car garage.

The 1st one here is looking into the second floor of one of the buildings.  

The 2nd one is a small outdoor bar made from a shipping container.  

It wasn't a night club atmosphere on the walkway, but there was some good live music. This trio in the last pic were playing some great jazz & they were really good musicians.

One end of the 1.45 mile walkway is in the "Meat Packing District" in the 14th St. area. This place used to be a real cesspool with hookers & abandon buildings, but now it's been cleaned up & there are lots of shops & restaurants. In the 1st & 2nd pics, there is a rooftop loading dock that still has the conveyor system that they hung the meat from. Not sure what this may be converted to one day, but I'd imagine it's prime real estate now.

The 3rd & 4th pics are of your typical NYC entrepreneur, or for you out of towners, a starving artist in a box.

When I was going to college in NYC back in the early 80's, I also worked part time making deliveries for my Mom's shipping company. A lot of the places I went to were around this area, so I saw first hand the abandoned freightline deteriorate. I am really glad that it was saved & turned into something nice.

Here's some trivia. In the 1st pic, the rusty steel arch is all that's left of the pier that the RMS Carpathia docked at to discharge the passengers that were rescued when the Titanic sunk. It's supposed to be turned into another public space, or a park one day.

E-booger called me this morning and wanted me to tag along with his GF to go there.  I never heard of it so I decided to stay home and fix a e-brake cable issue on the car and mow the lawn instead

Almost went back to NYC yesterday for something to do, but decided to stay home. My daughter remembered the name of the Japanese restaurant since she liked it so much, it's called "Blue Ginger" & it's on 8th Ave. between 15th & 16th St.

Yes, the highline is cool stuff. Nice pics!  I used to work in the tan angled building in your first picture.

Looks more crowded in the pics than it actually was. We had plenty of room to move around, & way more room than standing inside the port-a-jon circle at Carlisle.

 Well then, the day before we went to NYC we went to Kaaterskill Falls northwest of where I am in Newburgh & "HIKED" up the trail to the water fall, not "STROLLED" up.

I can only tolerate NYC on a semi-regular basis these days. To hard to get to & drive in, too expensive, etc. But there's always something to see or do.

Copy that.  It's a sad irony that I FINALLY got the Charger looking great again and now I don't want to do the cruises or shows anymore...

Don't worry about that..........just take it cruising at your leisure. All by yourself if need be. Don't need to show it off at shows to get pleasure out of it.
