Odd Switch?

I just noticed an odd switch under the hood of my 69.  It's mounted to a falt plate that's maybe 2 by 3 inches, it's screwed down to the top of the cowl just to the left of the drivers wiper arm pivot (looking at it from the front), it's mounted so the back edge is just under the washer hoses.  It looks like a dome light switch from a door jam, there isn't anything hooked to it though.  The hood must depress it when closed.

The only thing I can think of would be for an underhood light, but there's no evidence of that- I'm thinking some PO must have been a swell electrician, I've probably pulled 100 feet of 18 ga. lamp cord out from under the dash and carpeting- maybe he was making his own security system?  It's been in there a while, but I can't really tell if it's factory, and I haven't seen anything like it .  I'll get a pic when the camera is charged up, but if it's some rare 1 of 1 factory option I'll start the bidding at $10k.
