bad coil

I have been having this problem with the Bee for awhile. it fires up great & drives like a charm for about 1/2 hr. then, it starts sputtering, backfiring & dies. when I let the engine cool down, it would fire right up, like nothin' ever happened. HOWEVER, it would only drive good for a short period of time before it started acting up again.

I believe I have found the culprit to be an Accel Super Stock coil. it seems to be over-heating. I have never had to deal with a coil gone bad, so this problem had me bewildered to say the least. has anyone else had an issue like this?

Could be the problem , also the pick up coil in the dist if electronic will act up the same way so check that as well

I am using the MoPar Performance electronic dist. hmmmmmm. thanks for the info!

you can check the coil when it quits by unplugging the dist , if it sparks the coil is ok , it should spark everytime you unplug it

Yes, I had the same problem but with a standard coil. I replaced two before this third one worked. I got it from Rockauto. Not sure why the others kept failing but this one is working.

Problably the ECU if running Mopar Electronic ignition.

I have the same thing going on in the truck.  I've used three different coils, including the accel supper stock, and they all do the same thing.  Get super hot, then sputter out and die.  When it cools down the truck starts right back up.  Since it's happened on 3 different coils I'm sure it's an electrical bug elsewhere.  Just haven't debugged it yet.  I'm hoping it's a bad ballast.  I was thinking if it's feeding too much voltage in the run position it will heat the coil up like it is   :shruggy:

I am definitely NOT EVER purchasing another Accel SS coil. I just had this same issue on my '79 Dodge motorhome (440) after replacing the stock coil with an Accel unit. I was heading out for a trip right after swapping the coil, when it did the same exact thing the bee did. cough, sputter, puke & die...

For the Bee, I snagged one of these ECU box from Rick Ehrenberg (writes for MoPar Muscle I believe) off of egouge:

those boxes he sells are well worth the $$$. I seriously doubt the ECU box is the issue(?) however, I have found the Orange MoPar Performance boxes to be problematic.
