318 / 360 / 400 , was there a bad one ??, I would look for the big block one personally

troy.70R/T

I was refering to the new Dodge Magnum cars. :yesnod:

I guess we'd have to know What year Magnum in order to answer this one.

Old one? 400 BB....
Newer one? IMO? None of them. All Mercedes Benz and expensive as hell to modify/repair.

New magnum I would look for the Hemi for sure.  I think the only one you could get in it was the 5.7 wasn't it?

myk

Yeah there're only two V8 engines for these modern 'Mops...

they had an SRT version with a 6.1
stay away from the 2.7 junk motor
any of the other motors are rock solid   3.5 ,5.7 and 6.1

GO SELL CRAZY SOMEWHERE ELSE WE ARE ALL STOCKED UP HERE

Ghoste

Ah, I had thought the Magnum had missed the boat on the SRT stuff.  Knew about the RT but not the other.

Go with the 5.7. The 6.1 is only marginally faster but the 5.7 has mds so you get exponentialy better fue economy. I have a 5.7 in my charger and get 20 mpg around town and just under 30 on the highway. My friend has an srt8 challenger (6.1) 6 speed and gets 15 all the time.

Chryco Psycho

I guess you know that I wasn't thinking about stn wagons LOL
Yeah they made an SRT MAG

Ponch ®

depends on what you need it for. commuting? the 3.5l v6 or the 5.7 hemi. tween those too, the 5.7  - the difference in mpgs is marginal but the difference in power is better. If youre going for balls, get an SRT w the 6.1l hemi. You get an extra 80 hp over the Hemi. Its not a OMG difference BUT the 6.1 has a lot more potential if u start modding it.

That being said, if you dont wanna drop SRT $ (in some states you also have to pay a gas guzzler tax), get an R/T w the 5.7, throw a cold air intake, exhaust, and a Predator tune, and youll be pretty happy with it.

BTW - the MDS is bullshit hype. You dont really get any better gas mileage, but you do notice the lack of  power when its active. i simply turned the MDS off with the Predator and been happy ever since.

but yeah, stay away from the 2.7 v6. its actually not as bad a motor as its made out to be (they fixed a lot of the issuesu that plagued the 2.7 in the 90s /early 00's by the time the LX cars came out) - its just way too weak an engine for a 4000 lb car

I've got the SRT8 Magnum, Oh baby it's fun! Twice the MPG as the Charger, modern conveniences, Fast, and doesn't draw too much attention from the local law enforcement. 6.1 lt. hemi gets my vote.   :2thumbs:

2.7 is good, my wife had a 2.7 V6 in her 2006 Charger and it was reliable and never gave a ounce of trouble and we put over 50,000 miles on it. The 2.7 V6 in the 2000-2004 Dodge Intrepids were shit for sure but before I bought this Charger I asked around and found out the heads were re-designed to fix the problem (oil passages were too small in the original and would coke up with oil and just fry the engine) And I have seen more than my share of 5.7 Hemi's that have windowed blocks due to rod failure (power metal rods like most nowadays)
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Cooter

The 2.7 DOHC isn't "Junk" due to the heads. It's junk due to the water pump being driven off the timing chain. I mean, WTF designed that sh*t? A drain hole to the outside of the block? WTF? FAIL!

I have 189k on my 2.7 2000 intrepid! :yesnod:

I wonder if Chrysler will buy it back...........surely it has set some kind of 2.7 mileage record!

Cooter, it's the heads I was a tech for Dodge way back in 1999 and they sold many 2000 Intrepids that were 2.7's and they had poor oil circulation that led to oil coking and would just "grenade" themselves... I have seen it first hand and most were due to poor oil change intervals... And yes I know the water pump was driven by the timing chain I have changed many of them! not fun... But that was not the main problem!

If you are seriously asking about which motor then take it from an srt8 charger owner, DO NOT EVER TEST DRIVE THE SRT, because the damn thing will end up in your driveway! A really fun family car!
I get between 18 and 24.5 mpg and do have challenger SRT friends that get in the low teens but they spend alot more time at 6000 rpm than i do. The brakes are unreal and you corner on rails and the suspension is incredibly easy to work on but the SRT parts are expensive especially the nose. The SRT is supposedly only an inch lower but that nose aims for curbs and ramps!
If I ever sell this SRT charger it will probably be replaced by an SRT magnum.
Just came back from a trip and the evic indicated that at 75 mph the throttle was open 16%, this thing has a really tall ovredrive.

troy.70R/T

thanks for all of the input guys. I will definantly stay away from the 2.7.

I just bought a 05 Magnum Wagon last week with the RT package and the 5.7 Hemi.....What a blast,  I just love it and so does the wife.  Right now its 100% stock and never seen a winter!  I'd love to spice up the exhaust but with that MDS thing I dont want it show sound like crap when that kicks in so I guess I'll have to leave it alone.  It sure is a sweeeet car though!

Just get a Diablo Predator. It's probably the first mod you need to do when you get the car (that and a Cold Air Intake). Since Diablo just came out with a new tuning tool to replace the Predator, you can pick up a used one on LXForums for about $200 nowadays (just make sure it's "unmarried" - ie. they will only work with one car at a time). Youll have a few options of canned tunes (ie. tunes you can download from Diablo), but the best is the 91 Oct Hi Performance tune. Youll notice a huge improvement in throttle response and shift points. Predator+CAI+exhaust are essential. Anyway, you can deactivate the MDS with the Predator so you won't have that annoying drone if you "spice up" the exhaust. Not much you can do about the exhaust resonating though, unless you go for something relatively tame or one of the expensive (Corsa) systems..  Anyway, like I said in my earlier post, there really isnt a huge different in MPGs with the MDS off BUT you will be tempted to step on it more :coolgleamA: .
