Man Builds Himself Bionic Hands

As odd as it sounds, this story is both very cool & very sad. The guy lost both hands in an accident & couldn't afford prosthetic limbs, so he made his own. Won't be long now until the health industry here in the USA forces people to do the same thing.  ::)

Next time my kid says, "I can't do it, it's too difficult!" I'll show her this story.

Man Builds Himself Bionic Hands

Nearly a decade ago, Sun Jifa lost his hands in a fishing-related explosion. To make matters worse, he soon realized that he couldn't afford the prosthetic hands recommended by the hospital. Instead of wallowing, though, the 51-year-old man from Guanmashan, Jilin province, northern China, just decided to build his own bionic hands.

"I survived[the fishing accident but I had no hands and I couldn't afford to buy the false hands the hospital wanted me to have so I decided to make my own," he explained to the Croatian Times.

After eight years of tinkering, he says he finally developed a working model that allows him to grip, hold, and mimic other necessary movements via a system of pulleys and wires. "I control them with movements from my elbows and I can work, move normally and feed myself just like anyone else," he told the Daily Mail.

"The only drawback is that steel is quite heavy so they're tiring to wear and get hot or cold in the extremes of summer and winter," Sun added to the Daily Mail.

According to Xinhua, an estimated 24 million people in China have limb disabilities and would benefit from rehab services and greater prosthetic development.

The devices depend on a series of wires and pulleys inside, and are controlled by movements in his elbows. "I made this from scrap metal for virtually nothing. There is no need to pay hospitals a fortune." He says he will further develop the design for other disabled people.

If he had no hands to start with, I wonder how he built himself his new hands?  :shruggy:

I wanna know why the reporter didn't dig deeper into this "fishing-related explosion"!?! Even the drunken hillbillies I know rarely have anything that exciting going on while at the lake (or river). I have a friend from the Ukraine who says his dad used to fish with "dud" ordinance (ie unexploded mortar shells). It's apparently pretty common there.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Easy. He built a prototype set of hands to help him build these. :scratchchin:

But then how did he build the prototype of the hands he built if he had no hands to begin with to build a prototype?  :scratchchin:

Hmmm.......it's the old chicken and egg thing isn't it.

He knew that he handled dangerous material at work and built the prototypes before the accident. :yesnod:

Maybe his own steel version of one, but then he'd probably have a lot of down time between uses just waiting to heal.
