Please explain the difference between: Great Britain, Britain, England, UK

I've wondered about this off and on for a while but with the Olympics going on it's got me wondering again. As near as I can tell, England is the name of the country itself, Britain is pretty much synonymous with UK (minus Northern Ireland) and I don't know why the word Great goes in front of it sometimes other than maybe it's like saying cool or incredible.

So if that's correct would the British be anyone from the UK and the English would be those living inside England proper? You can be British but not English but you can't be English without being British?

What is the difference between the United Kingdom and Great Britain?

England is about the size of Alabama.

Scotland is about the size of South Carolina.

Wales is about the size of Massachusetts.

These three countries together make up Great Britain.

With the addition of Northern Ireland, about the size of Connecticut, they make up the United Kingdom, which is a bit smaller than Wyoming.

The full name of the United Kingdom is 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'. The term 'Britain' is used informally to refer to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom was created by an Act of Parliament in 1801.

In the Middle Ages, Wales was made up of several small kingdoms or principalities which, by 1300, had come largely under English control. But Wales was only formally incorporated into England by Parliamentary legislation that began in 1536.

Scotland and England had separate monarchies until 1603, when King James VI of Scotland succeeded Queen Elizabeth I on the English throne. A full merger of the two countries, forming the Kingdom of Great Britain, followed in 1707.

Ireland had come under varying degrees of English influence from the 12th century onward, but was not united to Great Britain until 1801. In 1922 southern Ireland withdrew from the union.

Good info, for those to lazy to remember of History books, or for that matter to google it. 

So if you can't remember your history books on this topic you're lazy? What does laziness have to do with a good or bad memory? And do history books in the US cover this topic? I don't recall learning about this in high school history, but then my lazy memory ain't as good, and/or perhaps as unmotivated, as it used to be. If you still have your history book, please open it up and tell us what it says. Or in your case tell us the facts from memory. And while you're at it grab your grammar school English book and learn the difference between too and to.

Also, there are "factual" discrepancies in Google. Did you know that? Hard to believe but true nonetheless.
