i recently bought 2 1970 chargers.  one is a rolling chassis in wonderful shape, with the other being a parts car.  i have the vin off of both cars (both xp29's) but the fender tag is gone off the rolling chassis.  it appears to be a highly optioned car with air, power disc brakes, hd suspension, cruise and sg rear end.  is there any way to glean more info from the vin tag?  thanks,  hawkeye

Ghoste

Only engine and assembly plant.  Is there an interior in the car?

Ghoste

Oh, and welcome to the group and we love pics no matter what condition the cars are in.

regarding options, the only thing the VIN's going to tell you is the motor it came with... Now, a XH versus a XP car has different "standard" items, but not in the realm of brakes, color interior, auto vs. manual transmission, etc.....

Welcome here, hawkeye. Unfortunately, no way to tell how your car was configured from  the factory without a buildsheet or fender tag.

Ghoste

Headliner and behind glovebox are a couple of spots to look for a broadcast sheet too.

Can you tell anything else without the fender tag?

Yes, if you have the broadcast sheet.

The broadcast sheet (build sheet) tells you everything,
The fender tag tells you the major options.  (69s http://www.1969chargerregistry.com/decoder.html) (68s http://www.jimshine.com/tag%20info/68tagdecode.htm )
The VIN tells you model (in this case Charger), engine, and plant built at.

thanks for all the encouragement.  just a little background info on my situation. i am located in north central mo.  never owned a mopar (i have 2 camaros and a corvette) but i have wanted a 69 or 70 charger since 1972.   i would look on ebay and craigslist but never saw anything in my price range (cheap).  then about a mouth ago i just happened to look on the des moines craigslist and there they were.  it was sunday morning, about 10:00, the guy had just listed them, i gave him a call and said he would take 5000 for the pair.  grabbed my wallet drove one hour north and had them bought bt 11:30.  the guy said he had 4 others lined up to see them that day.  the body work is done (the color is some gm red-planning on repainting it burnt orange). the motor  (440) and tranny (727) are being gone through as i write this.   so all i have to do is gather up some parts, have some redone, do ALOT of detail work and then put it together. and after only 40 years i will have my charger.   the only part that really scares me is the wiring.  i'm sure with all the info one this site i'll make it through (You'll probaly get tired of all the questions).  thanks again hawkeye
