Hi Guys -

I am posting this in the General Discussion forum because I need as many answers as possible. I've recently installed my BAER brake kit on my 68' Charger. After the install we discovered that Power Booster was bad - rock hard pedal. We checked the entire system for vacum leaks and found nothing, then we did a check on the booster itself - no vacum, so we are think that the diaphram is shot - thus it needs to be replaced or rebuilt. While looking for a new booster I've discovered that I may in fact have the incorrect one on the car. I went to www.rockauto.com to look up the Booster I would need for a replacement.

What I discovered was the following - the booster currently on the car looks like this:

http://www.rockauto.com/ref/Cardone/Detail.html?5473501.jpg

Now according to Rock Auto, this is the one for car with 4 wheel drum brakes - which is what my car came with initally - but then it was modified by the previous owner with a kit from an A-body and converted to 10.87 Discs in the front, my guess is that the previous owner never changed the Power Booster and just kept the standard drum brake one.

NOW... when I looked up the Booster for a car with Front Disc / Rear Drum the pic that came up was this:

SO. I know have to find one of these boosters or find and alternative booster that I can use - I am think perhaps one off of a pick-up truck or other Dodge Model. The problem is that NOBODY carries these Power Boosters anymore - they must all be rebuilt and re-installed. So, if anyone has any advice on this and or suggestions I would greatly apreciated it... PLEASE HELP!!

Thanks - Mike

Looks like you are headed to the Junkyard for a day of Fun ;D.  Other than that I have no idea.

Sorry

The Paddock sells remanufactured power brake boosters. When converting manual to power their catalog states you have to also change brake lines, valves, brackets and in some cases, the brake pedal. The price for a 68 Charger brake booster is $239.95. Their number is 800-428-4319.

I dont see why the booster would be different except visually.
I donjt think your worried about originality with your car are you?
The smooth booster is made by Midland Ross and the other one is by Bendix.
Others have done the disc brake upgrade with no problems from the booster (or so I have heard)

there should be no diffrence in the booster that would make a real diffrence in how the breaks function. there might be a bigger or smaller booster for the disc/ drum, but i don't think that would make a diffrence in the functionality of the breaks. the diffrence under the hood that needs to be changed when going from disc ot drum is: there is a valve, normaly screwed into the break master cylender outlet port witch holds some line pressure agenst drum beraks, beacuse if drum breaks loose line presure the wheel cylender will be totaly colapsed by the springs in the breaks. you need to be sure that this valve is not installed on disc breaks because it will cause the breaks to constantly be engaged.

if you are not messing with the master cylender and just the break booster... i would install the same break booster you have... or the correct replacement for that booster. the booster might be worng becasue it matched the master cylender... which matches the disc breaks, which are not ment for the car they are installed in.

i hope this helps.

if you can't find a replacement booster for that master cylender then you might want to look in to a newer master cylinder. as long as the car its pulled off of has a front-rear split with disc in fround and drum in rear the master cylender should work in you car (and of course make sure it bolts it).
my friend installed a newer break booster and master cylinder into his 66 mustang out of a 95 Arostar. he had great breaking power for almost no money.

First off - THANK YOU for all the replies... I friggin' love this list!

ok - here's where I am at now!

6T9_CHARGER_RT - You comments are indeed correct sir, the smooth booster is made by Midland Ross and the other one is by Bendix. So no worries - I have a friend, (AUTODYAMICS you ROCK!!), who was kind enough to pick up the my brake booster and bring it in for a rebuild for me - I should (GOD WILLING) have it back by Friday afternoon and be ready to roll for the weekend!!

Again - thanks for all the replies guys -

Mike
