Been wanting to get an external storage unit and recently learned they have them in wireless. Does anyone have one of these they'd recommend?

Bull,

Check out Cnet reviews, I'll bet they have covered them.

I don't have a wireless one, I got a 1TB unit that plugs into USB port on my desktop.....anything I put on the desktop from any of my other computers gets backed up on the external drive. It's a "Buffalo" brand I got years ago at Fry's....was around $50 I think new

The only thing about a plugger is that I have two computers, and the laptop rarely gets plugged in to anything unless I'm recharging it.

i bought a seagate several years ago and after moving and stuff finally got around to hooking it up 6 months later
costco purchase, no reciept anymore, after 10 hrs or so of running its program  it shut down and won't restart, emails to seagate never get returned
whatever you buy, try it immediately

With a laptop I assume you have a router? My Asus router has 2 usb ports on it. I have an external hard drive hooked to it so the kids can do their homework on any of the 3 desktops or the one laptop in the house. They just need to save it to that drive. Its just a small 160gb but shares well. For large storage I have 5TB in one of the desktops.

I looked at some of the wireless units and they sure are proud of them. My concern would be the transfer speed.

yea..that was kinda my point....I have our external hard drive plugged into the desktop PC's USB port....we mainly use our laptops for most anything we do...so all we do is save anything to the desktop computer via wireless router and it automatically also saves it to the external back-up drive.

which was a good thing, because about 3 weeks ago that desktop PC crashed, had to do a complete system restore from factory discs....I lost everything that was on the desktop PC, but I had all backed up & saved on the external drive

Is there some reason it has to be wireless?  I have a small NAS made by Netgear.  About the size of 2 coffee cups and sits on the table next to my wireless router.  RAID array with USB hard disk backup.   ReadyNAS Duo. You buy the disks and control the storage size.

Great unit.  :2thumbs:  You can set it up as open or give everyone in the house separate accts. Supports AV streaming...

I run the Apple 2TB Time Capsule for my backup. Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi built in. No issues.

Not if I can upload from two computers without having to plug them in to do it.

Ok then, just about any desktop NAS will work and you would just sit it next to your wireless router. Use a Enet cable to connect the NAS to one of the 4 network ports on your wireless router and you are good to go. It will be accessible from any device on the wireless network.   :2thumbs:  Probably want a router that has Gigabit connectivity as most NAS devices are Gigabit and if you plan on doing any streaming you will want that.

No need for a wireless unit.  :Twocents:

Check out http://www.newegg.com/ as they have what I consider to be a good review system. Like Amazon's. Plus they are a good e-retailer as well. I order just about all of my stuff from them (not that it's a lot).

If you have any more questions I will do my best!
