Anyone bought the new bumpers from Sherman?

Would re-chroming be the better way to go??

Sherman new price with bumperettes, $329.95 front or rear.

Tri-City plating, $330.00 front or rear, includes rechroming of bumper and bumperettes.

Thanks.

for the same price you will know everything lines up.  On the other hand, if you buy new you have a rechromable bumber you can sell for $40-$50. ???

What quality of work does the plater produce? If it is high and looks as good if not nicer than the repro, I would get the old one replated.

If I could have had the originals rechromed for the same money it would be an easy decison. All of the platers in my area wanted $495 for each bumper with the bumperettes.

For $500 I got both new bumpers with the bumperettes from a local supplier. BTW you should be able to find the repos cheaper than $329.

Man maybe I should get into the business of helping people get their bumpers replaced. When I was over in Thailand had a guy rechrome some pieces for me for $15. Yeah it would be a little pricey to ship to there, but it is great work. I had checked on it when I got back here, to see about sending my bumpers over to him, he was going to charge me $25 to rechrome the bumpers, and I had it figured that with shipping it would have been $250 total to do it. I decided to wait. His prices aren't getting any higher anytime soon, unless someone else goes to ChiangMai Thailand and looks him up.

i got both bumpers for my 68 from ebay. for alot cheaper than Sherman's . when they arrived the box said Sherman's. i think they put a stop to that, cause i just checked ebay and there are no charger bumpers for sale on ebay. Rene

I thought the repos are made by Goodmark like nearly everything other body part or...am I wrong on that?

Edit: here is the Goodmark link for the repos.

Checked with a local bumper plater, he wants $810 to do front and rear with bumperettes.  ::)

......Year One said they would send new front and rear bumpers with bumperettes out in 3 weeks for around $535 which includes shipping.

A guy probably should buy new bolt kits to go with the new bumpers?

As far as I can tell, Goodmark buys certain parts from Sherman (and maybe the other way around as well). It wouldn't make sense for both to make them when cardboard boxes are easier to buy.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

The repro bumpers are weaker steel but they seem to look & fit okay for the typical $20,000 car in the hobby.

Whenever these threads come up, I'm constantly amazed at the chroming prices you guys all seem to deal with.  I got my bumpers replated locally (Missouri) about two or three years ago for something like $250 each.

I think the eco people are the cause for re-chroming costing so much. The regulations imposed on the plating industry are huge. That's why there aren't many of them anymore. That's why Thailand is so inexpensive. They don't have the EPA breathing down their necks.

I picked up a set of the repros on eBay for my current '69 project. The price was very good from the seller I got them from, and were from Goodmark. The ones Sherman sells are Goodmark units. Price was under $500 for the pair. My originals were trashed, so rechroming them wasn't an option.

If you are building a high end show car, the repros are not for you. I am extremely VERY picky, ask Chris the moderator & he'll tell you.
They are however, very nice for the price. Mine had a few surface imperfections that I can deal with for the type of car I'm building. Compared to the originals, I thought the steel was thicker. They are pretty heavy. The bumperettes are nice, but I found they did not sit flush with the bumpers like the originals do. They have a notch cut in them in profile, where there should be a rounded corner.

I held up the front to one of my other cars, and it looked the same. I fit up the rear on my project car, where I was getting ready to weld in the rear valence, and it fit great. I was really surprised.

I just got my bumpers back for my 68 Roadrunner and they were $250 each, form a local guy in chicago.
I had my 68 charger bumpers done a few years ago the bumpers were the same price except the bumperettes were $50 each ( $200 total )
I looked at the repos and they are nice for the price,  but not as nice as show chrome originals.

bull

Someone on Ebay usually has new ones with the bumperettes for $279 each end. I can't find it right now but I see them all the time.
