Bullitt vs. Vanishing Point

Wonder what woulda happened if they had used a 1967-68 Shelby Mustang? I wonder if the Charger would have had to be driven slower then.....Hmmmm.

3800 LB. Charger 440 4-speed.

3200 LB Mustang....428 4-speed.

They didn't detune the Charger, but the tire contact patch was a lot smaller than stock.  Under those conditions it would slow the Charger down as effectively as several hundred pounds of ballast.  


As for a 428 Mustang?
Nearly the same cubes as the Charger + 600 lbs less curb weight + wider wheels/tires . . . it damn well oughtta be faster.

I think they should've had a smaller lighter 351 in that Mustang to tell you the truth.  The Mustang's front chassis was giving out under the weight of the 390.  And even if it wasn't, handling tends to help stunt cars more than horsepower.  



And from what I've read, both of the stunt cars were actually automatics, contrary to common belief.

Yeah, they actually used the 383/727 Challenger to tow a '67 Camaro into the bulldozers.  They wanted to use an auto-tranny tow vehicle so the cable wouldn't go slack when the driver shifted it.  


The other four Challengers were all 440/4spds.  The 383/737 was also the only car still running by the end of the shoot.

1.  Bullitt has a story line, it was lost on me because I just watched it for the cars.

2.  Vanishing point is like a porno.  Lots of fast driving and even a naked chick.

3.  Dirty Mary Crazy Larry.  That movie had it all.

You want to see an awesome car chase?  You got 8minutes and 11 seconds to watch it?  Not muscle cars but holly crap this guy is determined.

I'll take your word for it, not a big enough deal to me to watch it again.  I was sure it had the scallops behind the doors and ahead of the rear wheels there.  Unquestionably its a first gen Camaro but as for the comparison, I'd say mistaking a 67 Camaro for a 69 with a three second viewing window is a lot more like mistaking a 69 and 70 Charger from behind with the same amount of viewing time.

You can see vent windows on the doors of the Camaro during the credits.  That nails it down as a '67.

 Dirty Mary Crazy Larry was the best all around to watch. Vanishing Point, you gotta love a movie that has Leslie West's Moutain in it. Bullitt nothing but the car chase. Funny car chase movie, The Flim Flam Man. Dodge dart convetible chased by your standard Mopar police car of the 60's. Funny movie.

Watch both... I've seen both more times than i can count. that's not very high lol. I've never watched the entire bullit movie. Fast forward to the moment under the bridge when McQueen gets in the mustang. Chase scene lasts about ten minutes, then switch to vanishing point.

i agree bullit was boring as hell....The only scenes people remember from that movie is the chase of the mustang and charger THATS IT!!! you ask what the movie was about people dont even know. All they say is....

'hey remember that chase between that badass charger and mustang'

The movie bored the hell out of me. The only redeeming parts were the chase scene. A sheet of plywood had more charisma than Steve McQueen. The movie moved slow with minimal action.
Vanishing Point? Oh, hell yeah! It wasn't just the action or the driving. The music was cool. The supporting actors were interesting. The whole "Anti-establishment" theme was well represented. I was 6 years old when Vanishing Point came out, but I first saw it on TV in the early 80s. It is my all time favorite classic Mopar related movie.
I wouldn't recomend that you skip Bullitt, just be aware that the movie got its fame from a single chase scene embedded in a mediocre movie.

i think you'll find that's the case for all our favorite 'car movies', like Gone in 60 seconds (1974), Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, Mad Max, Road Warrior, Deathproof. That's why DVDs come with a chapter/skip forward buttons.

GONE in 60 was boring during the plot sequences. At least the chase was a L O N G  one. Mad Max? Road warrior? Not really car movies in my opinion but i liked the plots of those, DMCL was a decent flick without the chase.
DeathProof? The movie sucked ass. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much cliche Tarantino dialog. I swear that guy is a hardcore tweeker. THOSE types blab on and on about the stupidest things.

Whaaaa?  Mad Max and Mad Max 2 are some of the greatest movies in all of creation; they certainly don't deserve to get piled in with truly bad movies like Gone in '60 (both of them!), Junkman, Death Proof and the likes of those......"films."
