Late model diesel Passat or a 2006-2007 MB E class diesel. The Passat will get in the high 40s & the MB will get in the high 30s.

I had asked a mechanic about getting a diesel.  I couldn't help wondering if they are so good on fuel why isn't everyone driving one?

The answer I got was, that when the car breaks down the cost of repairing it more then makes up for the fuel savings.

But you also have to look at how long the diesel is lasting..... If I was going to get a car it would definitely be a diesel... I love my cummins Truck

okay besides the metro, what other little beaters get amazing gas mileage?  The metro's were 3 cyclinder jobs weren't they?

I got an 87 Civic last year for $850, get twice the fuel mileage as my pickup; saved my self $850 in one year!  And nothing broke down!!  Knock on my wood.  It's a 4 door, 5 speed; just averaged 39 mpg on my last tank!  Usually get 35.

All right Ian, put DOWN the JAP car and step away.. lets get that BADASS Charger out !!

Mike and I would be more than happy to "test and tune" it until about November  :D

I'm right there with you Chris, I'd drive the Charger every freaking day if I could.  I just hate leaving it out of my sight for too long.

A 2003 Excursion Limited 4X4 with a 7.3 is my first choice.  I would also take another 91 Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

QuoteFor a beater with high mpg, you cant beat a used 90s toyota.

True.  Sad, but true.

There might be a Detroit product in existence that matches a boring-ass Jap-crap 1990s Corolla in longevity, but it would be much newer.  An old Toyota still has the lower price & reduced complexity of a 15yo car going for it.

A diesel is the way to go.  My buddy has a 2000 Jetta TDI with nearly 400,000 miles and gets 55mpg on the highway.

I will not buy another gas truck.  I love my 7.3.
