I have searched extensively for information on the Neutral Safety Switch for my '69.  I am fairly confident that I need to replace mine, so I ordered one and am picking it up on my way home.

After reading many posts on the subject I just needed some clarification...  Other then screwing it in and connecting the wires, is there anything else to do?  I have seen some posts on "adjusting" and "shimming" them, but I'm not really sure what that means or what conditions would prompt such a need.

This looks like a relatively straight forward repair.  Am I missing anything?

install switch, and hook up wire connection, that is all with that part. i did have to adjust my shifter a little, so that when it was in neutral, it lined up right with the 'N' on the console, but nothing more than that. that switch also operates the back up lights.

Thank you so much!  I kind of figured that was the extent of it, however reading dozens upon dozens of post and I started to doubt myself.

As always, MUCH APPRECIATED!!!

The reality is that some aftermarket switches are made too long, in this case they need to be spaced out a little with shim washers.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Well - My switch came in over thre weekend and I went to install it on Monday.  I didn't bother installing the new switch yet because when I crawled under the car I noticed that the switch itself is not bad.  Rather, the harness was NOT even connected!  So I connected it back up and viola!  I now had a starting car again.

So last night I head to our local car show.  Fantastic turn out, decent weather and cold beers, what more could I ask for?  Well, as we were leaving my car would not start again.  I crawl back under the car, with spectators watching, and reconnect the NSS.  She starts up and away I go.  I get back home and for kicks I try to start the car.  Yet again, the damn harness had fallen off!

My question to you all is this...  As far as I can tell there are NO locking tabs or mechanisms on the harness to securee it to the switch.  I am baffled by this design.  Am I missing something?  If there IS a way to secure the harness could someone please attach a picture so I can see what I am missing?

BTW - I am also baffled at the way the wires run right above the exhaust!  Now, maybe that's not how she rolled off the assembly line and someone prior to me owning the car re-routed them.  If that's the case, please also let me know as I fear if I get the harness secured my next failure will be melting wires.

As always, thank you in advance!

The sockets in the connector are supposed to grip the pins on the NSS but they often get wallowed out so they no longer grip. You can reach down in the connector with needlenose pliers and squeeze the sockets shut a little.

After a trans overhaul (or two) the wire clips often get misplaced, the pic below shows the correct wire routing.

John - Thank you, that will help!  I leave for vacattion Friday so I need to wait till I get back to check out my setup.

VERY much appreciated!

i took some needle nose pliers, and squeezed the pins on the switch itself, and the harness fits snug.
