I hope someone can help, I have a 74 charger 440HP with a 727 3 speed auto.
I noticed that my tranny keeps loosing fluid on occasion, a pint here a pint there but nothing to show it's leaking it out on my driveway.
I often smelled oil burning from what I thought was my valve covers leaking oil on the passenger side, but it doesn't loose enough oil to worry with, yesterday I was adding fluid to my tranny again (1 pint low again) i accidently spilled a little on the manifold and it smelled excatly like what I had been smelling thinking it was motor oil, now I believe I'm blowing tranny fluid back up through my dip stick tube....Does this tranny have this much pressure that it's blowing up past a faulty dip stick grommet or something more ? what would cause this, my speedometer played out a few weeks ago and now needing either a cable or speedometer gear, can this be related .... ????
Thanks for any info

Pull the pan off and check the oil for metal bits and replace filter.
Sounds like its overheating.

Check the vent on top. If clogged from dirt etc. will sometimes cause this. Are you SURE it's actually coming all the way up the dipstick and not just leaking from the O-ring at the bottom of dipstick where it goes into case??

I've seen ALOT leak right there, along with the pan gasket.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'm not 100% convinced that the fluid is blowing all the way back through the dipstick tube, Since I was smelling the oil burn I just thought it was spewing out onto the manifold, I didn't think about it blowing out of the bottom gitting the exhaust system which is very possible too I suppose. The only way to find out is to put it on a rack i suppose, My next delima is finding the correct speedometer cables for the trannie with cruise control, does anyone know who has these?
