Remember, when most of us grew up we played football or rode bikes with the neighborhood kids ........no cellphones, no computers, no DVDs, no video games like PlayStation, ect, ect, ect ......
Hell, I never had a TV in my room but my kids have flat screens and blue ray players not to mention the ps3 and Wii.   Don't forget they each have cellphones and a mom that still cleans their bathroom.    :icon_smile_dissapprove:
They have no idea how lucky they are and it's still not enough.  Things are waaaay toooooo easy these days and makes people and kids lazy.  I must admit I'm guilty of the easy path myself.  But that's the world we live in today.

Amen to that, well said... IMHO it's being bread into the youth now, to be lazy & fat sit in front of the computer {like were doing now} or the TV playing games or texting or what ever, instead of being outside & playing, running, riding bikes or swimming etc., like we did in our youth, before the cell phone era, I'm 53 y/o & 6'2" or was & shrinking...LOL... 250lbs, I'm probably 20-30lbs overweight because, I don't move around as much as I use to, to much sitting at the computer or on the phone at my desk for business, hours & hours everyday, instead of out & about, more active, like I was not too many years ago now...

That's my biggest problem, too. I used to do home improvements & land surveying & I was outdoors & active 95% of the time at work. It's the opposite now & I'm at the computer most of the day & only get out to do site visits or pre-bid meetings. That isn't any exercise unless the walk from the lot to the meeting counts.

I bought a mountain bike a few years ago thinking I'd be wearing it out by now, but hardly have time for it with everything else that goes on once I leave work. Kids keep you busy while home maintenance & repairs add to it. I better make a resolution while the weather is still good & not wait until New Year's.   ::)

Sort of. Try taking a look at this: http://www.thedailybeast.com//content/newsweek/2012/05/06/why-the-campaign-to-stop-america-s-obesity-crisis-keeps-failing.html

QuoteThere is an alternative theory, one that has also been around for decades but that the establishment has largely ignored. This theory implicates specific foods—refined sugars and grains—because of their effect on the hormone insulin, which regulates fat accumulation. If this hormonal-defect hypothesis is true, not all calories are created equal, as the conventional wisdom holds. And if it is true, the problem is not only controlling our impulses, but also changing the entire American food economy and rewriting our beliefs about what constitutes a healthy diet. ...

If this hypothesis is right, then the reason the anti-obesity efforts championed by the IOM, the CDC, and the NIH haven't worked and won't work is not because we're not listening, and not because we just can't say no, but because these efforts are not addressing the fundamental cause of the problem. Like trying to prevent lung cancer by getting smokers to eat less and run more, it won't work because the intervention is wrong.

The authority figures in obesity and nutrition are so fixed on the simplistic calorie-balance idea that they're willing to ignore virtually any science to hold on to it....

I think the answer lies less in how much we eat, and certainly not in how much we move around, but far more in what kinds of things we eat.

For the record, I eat bacon just about every day, I eat a ton of salmon and tuna, I enjoy steak regularly, and I am not fat.

I do agree, some kids have it MUCH easier than we did, & I'm sure we had it MUCH easier than our mothers/fathers before us, and so on.
I remember staying outside until dark, riding bikes all afternoon in the woods or even going for a 15 mile ride for a slush & a candy bar. Then again, I can also remember staying inside for hours in my room building models (LOTS of them), or practicing the guitar. I was NEVER into sports as a kid, despised Phys.Ed. class. Always the last to be picked for any sport, slower than a snail on the running track. But, I was still always active outside of school.
Like it was mentioned, moderation is key. These days, I'll eat a moderate breakfast, nothing fancy. Usually lunch is crap food, I'm on the road quite a bit however if I am working from home I'll have a salad instead for lunch. Dinners are mixed, but I grill most seasons of the year so it's usually some kind beef, chicken, or fish. Bacon is eaten occasionally, but damn it's good!  :drool5:
I keep active with all the yard/lawn work, most home & car repairs, & enjoy a short bike ride with my son once in a while. I still hate sports.  :icon_smile_big:
Kids have their own challenges, as they see their friends also sitting around. There aren't many kids in our neighborhood, but we try to keep them active. My older one is active with soccer & other school sports. The backyard is also set up with many outside toys, playground, etc. Sure, they still enjoy video games & are now getting into music, which I encourage. They are NOT fat by any means, but what kid doesn't like to eat cookies once in while? After they finish their broccoli of course, which they do without argument.

Goddamn technology is what it is.  Obesity and lack of activity is what I call the results of the "point and click society," as in all people have to do to get gratification is get on their electronic device and point and click their way to whatever they need.  No one ever has to put on some shoes and hit the streets, working for whatever it is that they need anymore; we've taken the work out of life and it shows...

If you ask Bill Maher, it is partly due to High fructose Corn Syrup.
I usually ignore the guy because his political beliefs are totally opposite from mine. The Fructose arguement though has merit. Sippy cups with "juice"? Free soda refills at the restaurant? 64 ounce fountain drinks at the convenience stores?
I drink Double Gulps of Mountain Dew every day. I drink another 64 oz of gatorade and sometimes 4 cans of soda. I am 197 lbs and 20 lbs over my ideal weight. I'd weigh 220 or more if I didn't have a  job as a carpenter/framer. I work and sweat for 8+ hours 5 days a week. Kids today have paranoid parents that won't allow them to play away from home. It starts there. Fast food is convenient food. Bam! There is another one. Add to the list the growing ENTITLEMENT mentality that so many people have..."I DESERVE this 4 lb cheeseburger!"

Testosterone levels in American males have been dropping like a stone over the last several generations.  I don't think the data can be adequately explained with anything obvious.  If I recall, the start of the drop predated the obesity boom by decades.

There was also a study recently about High Fructose Corn Syrup (which is about as common as water in the US processed food supply).  I think it was found to fatten rats by something like twice as much as the same # of calories of regular sugar.  It also doesn't quench sugar cravings like the real thing and makes you wanna keep eating more of it.

I'm totally on the Fructose train.

We all know that Science is being applied to our food to make it more desirable, so we eat more of it. McDonalds has done it for 25 years with their fries.

Worst of all, things like Fructose are natural and biologically engineered into us; we would eat as much fruit as we could before the starving season of winter. Problem is we don't starve during winter anymore.

What this means, is we all have to quit eating so much and that takes a lot more self-discipline than it used to. Made worse by the slack lives we lead compared to 30-50 years ago.

There is a lot of truth in that. When I was driving truck, I pulled into this place to pickup a load and the whole area smelled like Pineapple upside down cake. Really smelled good. While they were loading me up, I went into the office and asked what they made there, and she told me that they made food smells. She explained that they could reproduce the smell of just about anything we eat. She said it was used to make things smell better and that they could take something that was really bland and make it smell really good.  She also said they could take something like a piece of bread and make it smell like a steak or strawberry ice cream or just about anything else they wanted.  That day they were doing pineapple upside down cake and if I remember right that load went to Pillsbury.

Makes me wonder what it was we are really eating sometimes.
