A few of you already knew I was thinking about this car. But, I saw this car today. The guy wants $2,500. Firm for it. I now don't know what I wanna do. I am not sure if I wanna buy it and fix it, or if I buy it and part it like I was originally going to do. It definatly looks better in the pics then it does in person. Personaly in my opinion, as a whole car in general, I'd say it is only worth about $1,500 to $1,700. As a parts car, it is worth $2,500. The guy has given me til Tuesday night to decide if I want it. If I do not, he told me right out, he is going to chop it up for the parts to put on Ebay, and scrap the rest. For those who don't know, it is a '74 ex 318 car with '72 fenders and bumpers. This car was a street and strip car. It had a 440 til he blew it up. What do you think?

1)The car looks like the pic... mean and a bit faded. The stripes are painted on. The windsheild is cracked all the way across the long way though. He does have tape between the passenger door window and the rear window cause the weather striping trim piece is gone. The car has '72 fenders on it, so they don't bolt up right. The owner said he thinks the driver side one has some bondo in it near the bottom.

2)He does still have the original blue trunk lid on a roller car now. It has 2 black racing stripes also. He took it off because of rust (not real bad) along the lip seam both sides of the lock. This silver one is a '71 lid, and does have the spoiler cut outs on the inside of the lid. It also has a small rust hole on the inside, passenger side, rear corner about the size of a quarter. The tail lights are indeed true '72 S.E. lights just missing the crome bezels that go around the lenses. (I actually own 2 bezels that didn't come with my car to make a complete set).

3)The floors are solid. The dash pad is cracked under the cover. The vinyl is not real dry, but it is not real soft any more either. Normal I guess. And the drivers seat (you see in the pic) is missing a button at the bottom close to the door, and has a silicone gobbed into a seam tear up near the head rest next to the door (minor seat issues). Otherwise, the seats are nice. If you look just behind the driver seat, where the crome trim is where the weather striping is, part of the quarter panel just below that trim piece was cut a little with a jig saw for some reason. The rallye dash is not original, and doesn't really sit right in the dash. There are a few gaps between the bezel and  the dash pad. It does however have a 150mph speedo. The bezel was cut for aftermarket radio too. The consol is nice, but it does have minor issues that you can see in the pictures. In the backseat pic, you can see the rear panel on the drive side is loose and sticking out, not sure why. The headliner is real nice yet.

4)The trunk is reasonably solid. But as you see in the pics, there is a hole in the driver side wheel well. All the drain plugs are gone too. Might be why the trunk is like it is. The first 2 pics are the drivers side of the trunk, the 3rd is  the passenger side.

5)This is one nice '72 grille yet. (first 2 pics) It is bolted to the longer '74 brackets.

6)Everything is gone out of the engine compartment. The radiator, wiring, fender tag, everything. The hood hinges were in the trunk with a set of headers. Again, he said it used to have 440 in it. The tranny is still there as you can see. There is a medium sized rust hole in the firewall from leaves building up too.

7)Driver side quarter is mostly bondo. Looks like it was fixed, then hit again.

8)The rear axle is a 3.91 posi professionally built for racing. He has the drag wheel that would go on the car when he would race it.

9)Under the car, the frame is pretty good. I didn't get down in the semi muddy grass to look real good, but it seems solid and usable yet with a lot of paint and under coating still on the underside.

EDIT; I SHOULD SAY TOO, I GET A 400 WITH THE CAR TOO, I RAN BEFORE IT GOT PULLED, THEN SAT FOR A COUPLE YEARS. STILL TURNS OVER.

Unless a car is really rusted to dirt and falling apart, it would be a shame to cut it up. Finding a car that hasn't already been restored, with little rust nowadays in almost impossible. There's some good parts still on that car. The hardest thing is dealing with the cut out shock towers, the rest looks very buildable.
Good Luck with whatever you decide.

$2500 doesn't get much even if it is a 3rd gen  ;D When the first picture came up I said wow out loud and that doesn't happen often. Buy the car and do a re-ring on the 400 and drive it then if you ever get in a pinch you can sell it. I don't know what your other Charger looks like but that one is the cats ass even if it is probably rougher than it looks.

BUY IT!
1969 Charger RT

Old Moparz

Ask yourself if there are a lot of parts on it that you need for your car. If there is, & if it doesn't kill you financially, maybe it's worth it. I also think $2500 is a little high, but then prices have been all over lately so I'm not so sure. I was in the same situation a few years ago with a '69 Charger I bought & eventually parted. My '68 had absolutely nothing when I bought it as a rust free shell, so instead of buying a gazillion parts one by one on ebay & at swap meets, I bought the '69 in pretty much the same shape as the car you are contemplating. They're both restorable, well not mine anymore, & in my opinion could be done since it's not a total rot box.

Buying it to intentionally part out & resell the shell is a lot of work & won't happen fast. The same with making it better to resell as a driver, beater or whatever level you take it to. Other factors for me would be having the space & time to do it, so maybe that means something in your decision. If you're comfortable with the firm price of $2500 & have the time & space, then I say buy it, keep what you need if you really do need it, & resell the rest. I would definitely get down & dirty in the mud & stab the frame rails with an awl or something to make sure the structure is sound. Remember, there is NO such thing as "surface rust".

I would have already paid for that car and made plans to drag it home.  Because of the desirable parts on the car, no matter what you decide to do with it, you cant lose. stop bleepin around and get it!

TeeWJay426

I'm with the majority on this one.... it's definitely not that far gone; lots of good points to it, and definitely worth saving. It would be a shame for it to be broken up for parts. I'd try to get it for 2K, but it's probably worth the 2500 he's asking, especially in this screwy market.

He has some NOS '72 fenders to sell to. I seen them, doesnt look like they were ever used on a car either. He thinks he will get around $800 for them on Ebay. It wouldn't supprize me. That guy has so much 3rd gen. stuff, I could easily spend $5,000. after the blue Charger. He has got a small barn full he is selling off. Has a bunch of '73-'74 stuff too. Grilles, bumpers, seats, rear quarters, hoods including a '71 R/T hood near mint condition with the correct metal insert for sale. I do have a pic of the hood without insert installed.

This is his Ebay stuff http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZonefast300lQQssPageNameZSTRKQ3aMEFSQ3aMESOI

He's also got a Colorado '79 Plymouth Trailduster 4x4 that he is going to sell after he puts the 440 in a nice '75 3/4 ton.

He also has what is left of a '71 Super Bee 4spd car. He said it was a 383 car. If I had a plasma cutter, He would give me the trunk floor I need for my '72.

Hey he's got 73/74 front fenders on e-bay -- perhaps he'll deal on the car and the correct fenders?

Either way, I say grab it too. Looks like lots of potential for a nice ride -- very least a shame to see it parted.

Holy hoods!!! Is that for sale???

Definitely worth making a driver. If you don't want it put a 318 in it and sell it to someone who really wan'ts one. Maybe you could make a few bucks along the way.

my suggestion.
buy the car
swap the hide aways, doors, hood and what ever else onto your car.
put your stuff onto this car and use the roller method to pint it :icon_smile_big:(still want to see if that works!)
get the car running sell it off on ebay (dont bother with the floors)
win win, you get the bits you want, maby turn a little profit, and another mopar is saved. I think the 'if you dont buy it ill chop it' threat is bull. he might do it but then again he might just be saying it to pressure you into buy it (to keep it from being chopped)

Yes Plum500 That is a real '71 R/T hood and it is for sale. It is almost mint! He also has the metal lovers for it and the correct inner piece. He said he is asking $1,800. for the complete R/T hood. I actually told him, if I don't buy the car, I might get the hood.

I admit its a bit sad to break up such a decent project but as long as you dont hack up the shell it will be worth it to some one as an r/t. they would still want it without the hood and doors.

If it grows on you restore it, if not flip it. Either way you cant loose with the way prices are and youll get some arousement out of it for awhile. IMHO:

-the car worths a rebuilt. I see it very nice, in fact better that mine when I started. I don't think $2500 is a lot expensive, but maybe $2000 will be better if doesn't include anykind of engine.

-If you decide to parted out sure you will get back the investemnt only with trannye, rear axle, hood and rear valence. and still will have a lot of parts and more money you paid.

What about that junker Bee he has.  Someone could prolly use those frame rails??  You could make some $$ there to help pay for the other car.  I'd want the '74 just for the hidden headlight assembly.  All third generations should have them,IMO.

That car is cool looking.  I like the color and stripes and hood, and the slots and big tires are cool looking.  Put as little as possible into it to get it a driver, buff out the paint and polish the rims and fix the rear quarter, detail the car, tires, interior, have a tough car to drive around, sell it later if you like,

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

I regret to say this, but I probably wont be getting the blue '74 Charger now. My van which already has issues (rear brakes & power steering hose), has developed a heater core leak. I have to fix it asap even though I didn't wanna stick any more money into it since I'm going to get rid of it this fall when I move to Georgia. But, I gotta have heat this time of year. I still could buy it, but if I still would, I would be finacially over my head. It really Sucks, but I am going to see if the guy will sell me the hood yet off it since he is going to part it out. Maybe I can get a decent drivers seat too. This might be a blessing though, because now I can concentrate again on my '72. But I feel like crap cause I did want it, and then telling everyone, then nothing. Sorry guys  :-[

Bummer.   Just wear long underwear, ski gloves, hat, scarff, etc., forget the heater core, in the summer you won't care and you will have the new cool Charger.

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

how much is a heater core? maybe 35 bucks or so. takes about an hour to put it in, no big deal there. add another one to the "i Could have, I Should have, I Didn`t"  list.      I wouldn`t  let a $35 heater core keep me from getting a car I wanted.
