Are the bearings pressed on the carrier?

Yes, bearings are on and I have two 1/2" wide steel rings which I am not sure where they go.

Do I need to pull the pinion gear or can I leave it in?

Those rings are a part of the bearing.  Called the "outer race"  You see that they are conical inside and fit over the rollers of the bearing?

The pinion gear stays in the diff for this.  Don't remove the pinion flange nut, otherwise you will screw up your crush sleeve!

I have to ask, do you have enough mechanical knowledge to tackle this project?  If not, maybe it would be worth it in the long run to have someone knowledgeable do it for you...

You must make sure that the gear pattern and backlash are set correctly when you re-install the carrier and ring gear into the housing.  Otherwise you could have a noisy diff or worse - failure of the diff (damage to your new parts)...

I have a lot of engine experience, just no differential experience. So, looking at spending $150 in tools or $250 for someone to do it, that KNOWS what to do, I am going with the $250.

Thanks for your help doctorpimp!!   :2thumbs:

did you take a backlash reading before pulling it apart , I hope so

It is still together, I have learned the hard way not to tear into something without knowing what to do.

Glad I could help!!
I rebuilt my first diff last month and it really isn't hard.  Just check and double-check your torque specs and the same for the backlash and pattern :)
