On a 1968 Charger with a 383 4 bbl what is the correct timing procedure, vacuum advance plugged or unplugged. And with a automatic transmission what should you set the timing at. Ive just replaced the vacuum advance on the distributor and when I suck on the tube the advance barley moves Ive read that you can adjust it but how much total advance do you want.

you want around 18 at idle and around 36 all in.  There is an allen key (3/16 maybe) that you can slide in the vacuum port, engage a screw and adjust the vacuum advance.  Chryc and Ron are the experts on this so hopefully they can add to this reply.

I think this has been covered since the site came back up, try to do a search to get more info.

depending on the cam in the engine you want to be in the 12 - 18* at idle range , biigger cam more initial advance , often the curve ends up so short that there is no reason to run vacuum advance at all , to shorten the curve turn the allen screw inside the vacuum pot counterclockwise
