Can I remove the axles from one 8-3/4 rearend and put them into another? Do I have to do anything with the bearings? Thanks

John_Kunkel

You are aware that there are several housing widths? The axles can only be swapped between the same width housings.

When swapping axles from one housing to another, you will probably have to adjust the axle end play; the threaded adjuster is in the RH bearing retainer.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

So as long as both rearends come from the same model and year. I just have to adjust the end play on the RH bearing retainer. How much endplay should I be trying to achieve?

.008"-.018" Jack up both sides so the tires are off the ground to be sure the left hand axle is thunked all the way in.

I would pack some fresh grease into the axle brgs while you have them out , they do not oil with the the diff oil

what is thunked?

A word that says the axle is pushed all the way in. It will make a slight thunk sound. ;D
