Year One only has 69-75 - as do many others....

Where to look?

Thanks,

I have checked every lock smith and key place in my area and nobody can find them. I know they are
out there I bought several sets off ebay as well as that site just posted.

When did they change the key style? The keys for my '68 are really worn out and old looking, the car has been off the road for 15 years and they are the '69 style.

THE KEY SHAPE CHANGED SOMETIME IN 68, I know some late 68's came with the 69 and newer style, but most
68 model year cars I  have seen and owned have had the older keys like above. My May 68 biult 68 charger came
with the old style keys, I still have my originals.

It's also possible that someone very early on just like the pentastar styled key better and had one made for the car very early in it's life.

JimShine

That is possible, but I assumed it was stock because the ring even still had the key code fob on the ring (which makes me think it was the extra set once upon a time), but its possible they did change it years ago.

I will get an exact date tomorrow, but it was during January 1968.I believe it was January 17th.

8WHEELER

I think the date will be hard to take to heart with our mopars  ;D   I bought my red 68 from the original owner in
1978, that's when I was told they were the original keys. And like I said they are the old style keys, I still have them.

I agree, but if it was built in June of 68 or something then it'd be fair to say that it was a very late build and could easily have 69 style keys.  Whereas a September 67 car would more likely have the old style obviously.  If it's January, well, that blows my theory all to hell doesn't it?

marangen

mine is december 7th 1967 - at least stamped on the interior side panels (door and back)..

is that late or mid-production?

Keys could be either?

My car was built January 16th 1968 (not bad, just a day off). Well, if these aren't right, I will have to come up with a correct set. That will be good as now I can segregate my keys. The Ford looking key is for the '68, stock Mopar is '69 and steel keys for the Coronet.

Ghoste

Well, if they aren't the originals they certainly have the look of a set that have been with the car a very long time.  Patina as the auction folks call it.

I'm dredging up this old thread because I just realized my early '68 Charger came with the newer style key (late 68 and on) but is apparently supposed to have the old style. Are the old style keys more readily available now?

Ghoste

I see them at swap meets fairly often Bull (now 67 trunk blanks seem a little more difficult, but that isn't your problem...).

UFO

IMO, Original keys have "A" stamped. Also if you bought a new ign lock cylinder set it was "A".The blanks (at least dealer sold ones)were stamped "B".

Ghoste

Never knew about the "A" and "B" stampings.  I'd still take a Chrysler dealer "B" over one of the generic keys you get at a mall kiosk.

I have a few boxes of OE blanks primary and secondary all stamped with the "B" if you need them.

I'd have to see the other side of that NOS trunk blank.  I bought a trunk blank before that I was assured was for my car but it is for a different application than mine.  I think 67 may be unique to that year.

Yea, those are the plentiful/common 69 and up keys. We're talking about the ones pictured up above in 8WHEELER's post.
