What color would the trans pan on a 904 be originally when it left the factory? It is currently painted black now but I want to say it should be a clear zinc plating.

Any help would be appreciated.

I thought that too but then figured it would have had to have some kind of rust inhibitor coating like clear zinc.  Otherwise, it would have rusted and caused major problems with the trans pan getting pin holes.

bare steel with some kind of rust preventative.

what that was I can't answer. But I want to say it was a phosphate coating of some kind

Well, I ended up stripping the black paint that had been on the trans pan down to bare metal, polished it up a bit to give it a nice new shine and then applied some RPM to it for a rust preventative measure.  Hopefully it will be close enough to original for peoples liking.

Bare steel.

I don't think rust prevention was much of a concern back then. Undercoating was about the best thing you got, and as we find out today it didn't do much back then either...
