hi all, new to the site after recieving my dodge charger last week 1969 383 727 hd traction axle blah blah blah.
im in the uk and struggle to find help or info.
the car from what i can gather is stock apart from rocker covers, set of tubular headers and a 4barrell intake manifold number 2951666 which i belive is off a 70/71 engine.
the carb thats on it is a carter with number 1565 on the body side and 1779 on the top where choke plate is.
the car ran rough when i got it, wont idle and cant get any adjustments of mixtures screws to make a difference. pops and bangs etc.
ignition was checked and set, so i took carb off and it looked like it hadnt been off the car in many years, took it apart and gave it a clean check all floats and needles air ways etc and reasembled, pump is a little worn.
i put a new base gasket on which was the four hole type but my manifold is the two devided type, so i cut the gasket to fit the shape of the manifold and fitted the carb back on.
tried to start the engine and it would only run on one bank of cylinders, its as if the carb is only working on one side of the carb, ie primery and secondry on one side of the manifold and not the other side.
would this be because i put the base gasket on the way i did.
what carb should that inlet manifold have on it, orignaly a 2 barrel, i was about to buy a holley 600 vacum secondries as i just want to cruise around.
but they told me the carb must have a air gap underneath it to work and that the carb shouldnt be seperated by the manifold in the way it is doing so, if thats the case why is the manifold built in the way it is.
what should be on it and what could be wrong with the carb to cause it not to work on one side and is my understanding of the carb in the way it works correct, if so  it wouldnt matter about the divder in the manifold.

thanks to all and i would be greatfull of help.

Sounds like your carb is junk and I believe think that you wold bet poor performance out of a 600 CFM carb, I have a 750 on my 383 but then it's not stock either.

im wondering that too but i made a mistake i think, i thought the right hand side of the manifold fed the right hand bank of cylinders, as i found out it shares both sides and visa versa.

so my whole bank of cylinders not firing on one side had to be something else, whipped out a plug and found a champion and rubbish champion is too, took another out and still a chamion but different numbers, very very knackard.

so leads plugs points condensor it is then and probly coil pack.

what should i be using.

on the carb side i only wish to cruise around so i thought 600 was fair size, my carb also leaks a little back into the manifold when engine isnt running, is this float levelas not set right do you think.

what plugs should i use.

thanks

Champion RJ12YC is factory , Autolites work well , don't have the # handy

You need an adapter plate, your intake is design for a different type of carb, get an adapter plate and that will solve your problem.

Something like this - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-2693/

or get an new aftermarket intake and 675 - 750 cfm carb.
